Hey guys,
I have interview at LECOM-Erie on Oct. 21. I was wondering how well the school prepare students for competitive residency. My goal is to go in specialty-Surgery. Also, I have heard that to get into top specialty, one must get into some research lab. Anyone knows if LECOM is big on research? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

hey I have an interview at LECOM on Oct 21st too 🙂

LECOM's motto is "preparing the next generation of primary care physicians."
There are some research opportunities, and we have a new research club, but as a whole it's not something that's emphasized at the school. I would go out on a limb and say research isn't too emphasized at any osteopathic school(compared to allopathic).

Residency placement isn't something discussed at LECOM. There are no match lists that I know of. The school also doesn't talk about board scores or admission statistics. From my understanding, most grads first pursue a traditional rotating internship.
If LECOM were NYCOM, CCOM, PCOM, COMP,etc I could refer you to a match list, but sadly, I can only give you this: http://www.lecom.edu/alumni/alumni.htm

I've heard twice, once from the Dean herself, that there will be a "board performance" and "residency match" presentation in the near future. Choosing you school wisely is important, but don't forget to make you can make your own future also.

Thanks for the information Dr_Sax. At least I have some ideas of how the students match up! I have one more question: Is Erie, PA a big town or a small village type? Anything good to see in Erie? Thanks for your time buddy.

Never think that what medical school you go to has any impact on your ability to get into a specialty. If you want surgery, and are dedicated enough, you will get it. I promise. If you went to LECOM, NSUCOM, Harvard, wherever. If you want it, pursue it, and you'll get it. Bedamned the average board scores or match lists!

Erie is one of the largest cities in PA but many people still find it to be "rural." I grew up in a town of 15K so Erie is pretty big to me. The greater metropolitan area has I believe 400K.
Erie has many things to do- especially concerning the water. If you're from a very large area and Erie still doesn't do it for you, Buffalo and Cleveland are each 90 miles away in either direction.

For MD or DO programs you gotta find out the average step 1/2 board scores. These are all that matter in the long run. Nobody cares about what clubs you join during medical school. At least surgery wont care.

good luck'
