Is there anyway to find out which programs are considered most competitive? Just curious, if there are any books or stats out there...

If you're defining competitive purely by # of applicants to # interviewed and # of residents they take each year, such information is listed under each program seperately on FREIDA.

The simple answer is no. While you can get number from FREIDA it does not tell you what the pool of applicants looks like. I would suggest talking to either the dept head in your medical school or the residency director to get a sense of which programs are more competitive. Have a list ready as it would make things easier. Also, hang around scutwork.com and AMSA's site to get a sense what people like/dislike. There is no easy way to tell. Certain specialties have directories that publish avg USMLE scores of their intern class, so it gives you some sense. But, truthfully, no one way to know. People value different things in their residency so one which would be best for one thing may not be good for others.
