There are bare minimums that ABIM and the IM RRC require, but it leaves a LOT of leeway for the individual programs.

The basic requirements were something like 12 months have to be outpatient, 12 months have to be inpatient (wards+ICU), 9 months whatever the program wants, and a max of 3 months vacation. Have to have one month Emergency Medicine as well, which I can't remember if it falls under "outpatient" or "whatever the program wants". That, plus the requirement that you be exposed to every internal medicine subspecialty (including geriatrics) in *some* fashion, whether inpatient or outpatient, is pretty much it.

The only exceptions are for the research tracks, which have their own strange requirements.
