On the resident site website if you want to look for swap positions you have to list your current program. Can your PD log in to RS and look for applicants and tell that their program has someone looking to swap ?

how does this process work? Who is to say that your current program would even agree to that the person you are swapping with?

Great point, there is no guarantee your current program will accept a swap. However, having a potential replacement for both programs helps with issues like call and holiday coverage. Plus it saves the program the effort of searching for a qualified candidate. But it takes at least 2-3 months to get up to speed at a given institution, so no program will take a "swap" lightly. There is also the issue of in-training exam scores and eligibility for board certification which cannot be overlooked and may hamper a swap.
