i dont find any error in ur sentence....its absolutely clear...and the readers got what they wanted...wonder wht bds-dmd was trying to say???

I am not trying to correct any one's English. Its just that I am sick of people saying you know its an Indian when he/she says "I am giving the exam in Dec." In the US, the faculty gives the exam and the student takes the exam.

I am not trying to be Americanised. But it is very important to know the local lingo as thats effective communication. Speaking with an accent is not going to help you be understood better. Its using the local vocab thats useful.

No offense meant to any one.

Hi

I'm glad you brought up the topic. Everytime I saw people write I "give" or "gave" instead of "take" or "took" the exam ect., I always wondered why they wrote it as such because it didn't make sense to me. I wanted to correct them but I thought I might offend them in doing so. Then I thought maybe it's just how it's said among a certain group of people even though that is not how it's supposed to be said correctly in North America. So I was like...okay, whatever 🙂
People shouldn't get offended if they're corrected because that is how you learn. I'm sure BDS-DMD didn't correct the above poster with the intention of embarassing or degrading him/her. Like BDS-DMD said, every country has its own way of saying things and if you learn its way, then it makes the communications better. Since I take it that most, if not all, of you will live/stay in the US or Canada, it's just better if you learn the way Americans or North Americans speak and use words.
I had to do that when I was in England. We call the back of a car "trunk" and they call it "boot" and I had to go along with that 🙂, among a few other things.

Thanks for backing me up Cheer-up. When I joined Penn, I would often see the regular 2nd year students come to the lab with the typhodonts and instruments and I would ask them"Do you have a practical?". They would say no and then all of them would be working in the lab in no time and I would get confused as to why they said no. It took me some time to realize that here, what we can practical in India is called "lab" and practical here means an exam.

Tell you what, lets start a thread about that to help all of us know the local words for a lot of common things.

Good idea, but don't know where to start 😀

Thanks BDS-DMD,
I have few French, Spanish (from Spain), Japanese, Chinese, and Korean friends, who have their own accent, grammar….…..so as freshly immigrated Indians. I do agree that good communication skills are very important to be successful but whether you write ‘color or colour’, ‘centre or center’ should not matter much.

i give my 2 cents to u bds -dmd
coz its always good if we are corrected before time ...as we have to compete american students and not to segregate ourselves ...that's a good start ...
i'll appreciate if you correct me wherever im wrong!!!
and also im happy to see u as moderator of this forum...

No doubt you are doing a great job....but some people maybe a little sensitive and correcting them amongst a few strangers would be a little degrading..i know nobody knows anyone here personally, but they do constantly keep in touch through the forums....
you can start the american lingo ...it will be helpful...
my opinion

'Centre' instead of 'Center' and 'Colour' instead of 'Color' in the SOP will be considered a typo, isn't it?

Hi

I am not too sure if color will cause in problem in the SOP. In fact I did not use American spellings in any of my documents simply because I was coming from India for my exams and interviews and I did not want them to feel that I was trying to be "Americanised". How ever now that I am here, I would use color simply because I don't want to stand out.

I still speak with an Indian accent and I will not change that. I have not taken an American name or things like that.

How ever I still believe in knowing the local lingo. You need not use it but knowing it will help you understand what the other person is saying.

I believe any American who would be reading this would be thinking what a bunch of idiots we are. Why is speaking in 'Local lingo' so important. I think even after 59 years of post- colonialism we (Indians and Pakistanis) cannot get out of this inferiority complex. It is perfectly normal to speak the way we do. Have you heard how French and Germans speak English? They don't try to copy the way Americans speak english. Why should they?

I personally believe that many desis make absolute idiots of themselves when they try to act 'americanized'. Very, very few, can carry it off.

Anyway, I may have a paindoo accent, yet at least I have an identity.

I soo much agree with Amir, we Desis just are scared to stand out, and just look like Jack....sses in a heard.

Hi Amir
Totally agree with you 100%. People here are so scared that if they'll pronounce the way they do the others will laugh on them. They are ready to learn everything from them even ready to accept their wrong usage of grammar. I am happy the way I am & if someone does laugh on me for the way I speak it'll just show their immaturity & their hospitality skills. I don't want to become one of them. I am what I am & I am not embarrased by it & neither will I ever feel.

Haii Amir,
I totally agree with you.
Its not necessary to copy the things blindly because some one does it.

Thank you guys for agreeing with me. I don't consider this some kind of boxing match 😉 but somehow I get very irritated whenever this topic is discussed. Maybe, because difficult times make you cranky. I am also sorry if I offended anyone. I guess everyone is entitled to living as they wish. But for me, paindoo and desi are the way to go 🙂

Dear Moderator,

See what you did?Totally changed the subject of the thread.

Looks like you learnt "taking the exam" recently.FYI as far as correct English is concerned it is "taking the exam" and nothing American about it.

I do not understand why are you making such a deal of the whole thing. It is not your place to correct people.Stop pushing the limits.

People are stressed about their score and admissions and no one gives a damn about lingo and your compulsive behavior.
