Hey

I took Gen Chem 1, but it was in the Fall 2001. After this long lapse I am debating whether to just take Gen Chem 2, or to retake Gen Chem 1. Will Chem 2 refresh what I went over in the first half adequately so that I will be able to do OK on the DAT? I feel like I have forgotten alot, but perhaps it will come back to me when taking the second half. Please advise.

I totally forgot 95% of gen chem. I found a series of lectures on videotape that have helped refresh my mind. Personally, I would not take the first half again. I would try self-teaching and see what you come up with. 🙂

I had the same problem as you, except it had been longer since I had general chemistry. The low practice scores in that section almost scared me into taking a summer course just to refresh my memory. I decided, however, to just study what was in Kaplan and see how I would do - I received a 19 on the section. Though that is not a terribly high score, it is a far cry from what I was getting a month earlier on Topscore and Kaplan practice exams. Everything you will need is in Kaplan and I would advise you to sit down with their blue book and just memorize their general chem section - break out the flashcards, videos, etc. to help you. I am sure concepts and principles will come back to you within a few times of going over the material - and doing so is a lot cheaper than a formal university course.

I wouldnt take it over. I took gen chem 7 years ago and did fine on the DAT after studying from the kaplan book and class.

If you believe that you are self-motivated and confident that you can pick up the missing pieces (of GChem1) in GChem2, in order to 1) do well on the DAT and 2) do well in GChem 2, then I'd say don't retake. It is totally doable, but also, it totally depends on you.

gen chem is a joke, you can learn all you need to know from the sequence in 6 weeks in my opinion. i retook my gen chem 1 this past spring to raise up my C+ i got in it 4 years ago. i couldn't believe how much i recalled, i honestly spent probably 10 hours all semester on my homework, 0 hours studying for exams, and probably 15 hours tops on lab write-ups. i'd focus more on o chem. but that's just me

hmmm what about Ochem I?

i took Ochem 4 years ago and got a C+... i don't remember a darn thing, and i have to complete the sequence this upcoming spring.

with an old crappy score, should i retake the course this upcoming fall?

well the xfer from UT-Austin to Ariz State isnt taking on Gen Chem 1 since UT Austin doesnt do a concurrent lab with it. Same course gets lost in translation, and I blame UT-Austin, they always seemed to have to do everything differently.

Dammit.
