Retina fellowship AUPO vs non AUPO

I am applying to surgical retina in a few months and just wanted to know how much AUPO matters. Also if there are any non AUPO programs that are definitely worth applying to. Planning on going into private practice if that makes any difference.

I'm retina (private practice) and had to look AUPO up. It's a great idea for standardization. If someone was coming from a fellowship I'd never heard of then YES I'd want AUPO recognition. But, a lot of our new recruits over the years have been word of mouth. That means, not only were we already familiar with the fellowship, but we also knew attendings within the fellowship who could give a thumbs up or thumbs down

If you look at list of AUPO certified fellowships basically all the good ones are on there. I'm sure a handful have decided not to go through the hassle of getting certified but in general you are good either way
