Leaving primary care after 10 years to do non-clinical work. Will I be able to return to primary care after 3-5 years or lose all my knowledge!? In New York market.

It really depends on many factors. What specialty? Why the leave? Full-time or part-time? What type of clinical setting will you work in?

The chances are high that you'll need to go through a formal re-entry program.

are you an attending?

If so, it might just be a midlife crisis. Try meeting a new friend are go limpiandoing.

just my 2 cents =)

Assuming you continue doing CME and maintain your license and board certification, you shouldn't fall that far behind in 3 years. Most potential employers will be wary of hiring somebody who's been out of practice for any significant length of time, however. I'm not saying you won't be able to get a job, but it'll be harder, especially in a saturated market like NY.
