Yes, Yes, I am way to lazy to try and reread Cecil's in a week and would like to hear some recommended books for the IM Shelf Exam. I have the Kaplan Step 2 Books(which were great for the surgery test by the way.), RECAll, and Baby CECILs. Just wonder if anyone had any suggestions, Ive got three weeks till the test so I have time to order something.

Im going into GAS so I would like to lock up an A for IM, and then relax a little for OB and Peds.

Any help would be greatly appreacited. Also if anyone has a Q's about surgery test, I did really well and can share some strategies.

Gotta do MKSAP-II for Students. Everybody will have their own favorite supplementary books, but MKSAP-II is on everyone's MUST KNOW/DO list.

try the sticky at the very top of the page in this forum that says "read me first! lots of useful links here."

For medicine, First Aid for the Medicine Clerkship was really quick and dirty... it was easy to get through in about 3 weeks time. Would definitely recommend it. The surgery shelf is basically all medicine so there's no good way to review. I did both Pretest and Appleton and Lange and thought it was a huge waste of time. I'd spend time reviewing facts in Recall about the basics - abdominal pain, bilious vomiting, painless jaundice, cholecystitis.

Thanks for the tips,
We go through those MKSAP questions every week and they are really helpful.

For Surgery I would recommend the first 250 pages of RECALL(thats all the intro stuff) and then I would read Kaplan Surgeryuntil the pages fall out. 🙂 I only read Kaplan once, and did really well on the test, If I had more time I would just keep reading it.

For Internal Medicine: MKSAP 2 and Case Files. I think Case Files is so chock full of information yet so easy to read. That series is very good and very underrated--never hear people talking about it much.

For Surgery: Surgical Recall is a must. Other than that, an internal medicine rotation is the only other great way to prepare. PreTest wasn't good at all. A lot of people suggested Lawrence but I didn't like it.

just to repeat those above...mksap II was outstanding. wish i would have started it earlier. it has a great cd so that you can do q's on computer if you like that sort of thing. step up to medicine is also very very good.

as for surgery. recall is great. most of the exam is initial work up and management (airway, fluids, etc.), very little diagnosis and virtually nothing on specifics of procedures.

I completely agree, Case Files for Internal Medicine is excellent. Best Review book I found for it. MKSAP is good, but do not stress if you are not getting really good scores on them because they are much harder than the Shelf. Pretest Medicine is okay (I tend to like to do questions though)

Surgery, recall will get you through surgeries by let you answer the pimping questions you will get, but I found it useless for the shelf. I normally hate the Kaplan books, but I did like the surgery one - that is all I used.

Ok, I'll admit my ignorance here (third year diesn't start for a few mre months).

What is MKSAP, and MKSAP-II? Where can they be found?

Thanks!

Medical Knowledge Self Assement Problems. Our school prints our copies each week depending on what our test is over. I believe they can be found on Barnes&Noble or Amazon.

Thanks to all the posters for there insight, I have 8 days to study before the IM Shelf. Boy is this gonna be a fun week. 😱
