Hey folks... I'm gonna be doing a surgical internship next year (in preparation for a subspecialty), and I'm looking for some advice on review books. After the 12 months of unadulterated slack that we call fourth year, I think I'm gonna need to brush up before starting internship.

So what's a good book with practical information for the intern? I'll probably buy Mont Reid to carry around in my coat, but that seems better for reference than as a primary source for learning. Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Congratulations on getting into residency! I think the surgical recall series might be helpful (there is the advanced recall if you have used the thinner one). I also found that the Washington Manual of Surgery was very helpful during my AI. Of course no book is perfect for everyone. Go to your bookstore/library and see them for yourself. Good luck

Lawrence's is a good place to start or First Aid for surgical residency. Used copies often float around on e-bay for cheap. Most of the surgery textbooks, Sabiston, Greenfield, Schwartz, will have more depth than you desire. However, some places actually give texts to their incoming house officers including prelims; something you might want to check into.
Surgical Recall is packed w/ relevant basic info.

The Washington Manual Surgery Survival Guide is the best book I've found. It's case based - i.e. care of a SBO, care of a post op colectomy, intial w/u of a pt with CP or SOB - and VERY practical. It also fits very nicely in a white coat pocket. This is different from the Washington Manual of Surgery which is a much larger, much less practical volume, especially for a prelim intern.

When you have the survival guide memorized, then move on to something else.

Thanks for all the great advice, guys -- I really appreciate it. And if anyone else would like to weigh in with their two cents, I'm all ears.

Thanks!
