Hi Hydrocortisone, sorry about the rejection. It is still early in the process so I've seen/been told. Most likely more interviews will come after the New Year! Good luck!

Anyone apply to Northwestern? I am just wondering if people's apps have been fully uploaded by the program. Everything but my letters have been uploaded, kind of interesting....also anyone applying to Cali programs? Has Stanford or UCLA downloaded people's application? Mine goes un-uploaded. Just wondering. Thanks!!

Hey guys, don't forget to register for the NRMP match. Opened today 1/5/10. You will have to cough up $50 btw....

There is one observation that maybe someone can help me understand. Once one registers, program "quotas" for fellowships can be seen. These quotas represent the number of spots available by each program. I noticed some programs (that I applied to) not even listed on the website, which makes me wonder, do some programs register to the NRMP and offer their quota information late, or is it assumed that if a program is not listed, it has given its spots to internal candidates (and thus don't register at all)? If the latter is the case, then almost half of the programs I applied to offer no spots to external candidates which is kind of dishonest because unfortunately, I am freakin broke!! Well at least I save on travelling money I guess....

Interview invites are lagging. Hope it picks up. Good luck all! ;)

Ok guys....please lets post good or bad. This is supposed to be informative for everyone to know what programs have communicated to applicants. Let's keep this forum alive!!! Good luck

Congrats Rheumor for your interviews! I applied to BGW but no rejection or interview yet. I only got those 2 interviews, no rejections so far. Did not apply to California or Chicago. We will see, I struggle to find dates to go to my interviews. How do you do that?

Hope for the best :)

Well I think you have to analyze how much time you can take off during the interview period. I am kind of lucky in the sense that for half of feb and half of march, I am on non-call outpatient services. So I am trying to interview mostly during these times. However even this is not as easy as it seems because I also have outpatient clinic at least once a week and I have to try to schedule around that as well! I think you have to be realistic also and decide on a set number of interviews you are willing to go to. For me, I think I am going to go on max 10, but looking at my schedule, more likely around 8. So I will schedule 8-10 and as more come in (hopefully), I will likely decline some to make room for others I am more likely to rank. Looking at FREIDA, it looks like most programs (the ones that I applied to) interviewed anywhere from 12-35 (mode 15) for 2-4 spots last year. Thus I figured that if I can go on ideally 10 interviews, I should match somewhere. Good luck and thanks for posting london12. It is approaching peak time to hear from programs (judging from previous posts), so everyone should get ready! Good luck! :luck:

My problem is, I have no LOR from any Rheumatologist. So far, got 2 IVs.

Hi!

I'm an intern and I think I am interested in Rheum vs Endo. I do my rotation in June in Rheum but have had a few prelim exposures and I think its cool (I also dx'd a rare disease in my outpt clinic based on joint findings, so thats where the thrill comes from)

For the future Rheumatologists, can we spark discussion about the field and the future of the career. My significant other is primary care also, and I've always envisioned having an outpt practice. Don't want to lose my skills as a specialist, especially when this country is in need of front-liner primary care docs.

Thank you,
A

What is going on with Cali? Anyone heard from UCLA/Stanford/Cedars/USC/UCSD? I would say we are approaching peak invite time, so I don't think it is unreasonable to wonder why no word from these programs. UCLA hasn't even downloaded my app! I hope this isn't a bad thing. Anyway, I have no choice but to wait. I cancelled my first interview today....felt kinda guilty about it afterwards. Anyone else ridden with guilt? But I have no time!! Maybe I should take a leave of absence to interview and then come back

@ ariee, rheum is a good career choice.
1. You work with referrals, you don't have the pain seekers that you have in the gen med clinic, you have an infusion center, you give "chemotherapy", w/o dealing with cancer.
2. Fellowship is quite easy. You have 2-3 days of clinic and phone call. You can moonlight as much as you want
3. Money can be really good if you are in an area w/o rheumatologists.
4. You can always go back into being primary care.

@ other co-applicants.
I haven't heard anything from 30 programs. Only 2 interviews. I wish I had some rejections to know that they checked my application

@ Rheumor even with only 2 interviews and I cannot find days since I have night float and ICU between now and April. Anyways, I may use some vacation days (boo-hoo).

Wow london12, sorry to hear that your schedule is hell! Not just because you have to find time to interview but the fact that it is NF and ICU! I went through that earlier this year and it was not pretty. It further solidified my desire to go into Rheum! :)

Hello guys,
How late in the season is this considering that I applied late and my docs got uploaded late. Does anyone get a prematch during a fellowship interview?

Welcome hotjoints! I think it is around peak time to hear back from programs or at least very close to it in the next week or so. Whether or not it hurt you to get you app together this late in the game is hard to say. You may be at a disadvantage in the sense that the selective programs may have sent out invites already and filled spots, so you may be essentially waiting for people to cancel. But then again, some programs haven't even reviewed applications yet, so it may not even matter. You can look at the invites/rejection list above and see who has sent word out to applicants. As for pre-match, I dunno. I assume it happens more than the NRMP would like to know, as there isn't really anyone policing PD's. Congrats on Cleveland. Not a bad way to start off! ;)

Rheumor! You're such in demand! Wish some of those great programs would invite us soon. :xf:

Glad I'm done with NF and ICU (did that in a row for the last 2 months). Now I can schedule my interviews with ease.

UC Irvine pulled out from the match. $25 wasted.
Good that I did not apply to Univ of Chicago. Would have been rejected as well.

Good list :)! No word from MGH for me...it is indeed reassuring to see that UCLA downloaded apps! I was going to apply to UCSD but then decided not to in the end...what are your thoughts on that program? Have you heard from Stanford (assuming you applied there)? If you don't mind me asking, could you post your stats? Wow, I think I asked you more questions than you will get during your interviews! Good luck!

I think UCSD is a good program, its not in the top 5 rheum programs but definitely in the top 10-15. I did not apply to Stanford 'cause I have no idea about their rheumatology division.

The thread is slow!! Comeon guys! I had a question...has anyone interviewed yet? My first one is coming up and was wondering what the general feel is for these interviews compared to residency ones i.e. should I have a case ready to present? A day full of interviews is bound to be painful. Good luck all! :luck:

I have done one interview. It was pretty much like the ones I did during residency application. A lot of them asked why I wanted to go to rheum and what my plans would be after rheum. they also asked about my research interests and previous projects. I think it was an overall benign experience. Im not sure if it would be the same as the other interviews I have coming up. Good luck to all.

Just curious. One of my friends is applying to Rheum this year and he has 4 interviews so far. How many do you think on average someone would need to get to match into rheum. I just matched into Pulm/CC last year and the consensus was around 8 but curious if it is the same for rheum.

Thanks:)

Interpreting the 2010 data from NRMP match in Rheum, it looks like (for AMG's) 84% matched in their top 3 choices. This number may be different for IMG's. From people that I've spoken to, anywhere from 5-7 interviews is a good number, but I would think 4 is probably just as good. Just make sure your friend nails those 4 interviews and hope for the best. Good luck to your friend!

Congratulations to all! I sure hope that everybody gets matched.

I dont like this snow weather, it's messing up my interview/flight schedules. Costs money!

Yeah tell me about it jerold. I have an interview coming up on the East coast and I'm worried that the weather is going to make me miss it! I wonder how readily the programs will rearrange cancelled dates due to weather conditions...

Shifting topic to programs in nice weather locations, it comes to my attention that I have heard NOTHING from UCLA or Stanford. Anyone?

Back to programs in not-so nice weather locations, it also comes to my attention that I have heard NOTHING from MGH. Anyone?

I don't want to annoying and bug these places to see if they have even reviewed applications. I just need to be more patient....Hope interviews are going well for everyone. Anyone want to share their experiences? :)

Could you help me? What to write to deny an invitation or cancel an interview? Could you give me some examples? I feel so bad for some reason, but I really don't want to spend money to interview in places I am not very enthusiastic about!

Do you prefer to deny an invitation or just not answering the email?

Wow you have posted 5 places you received invitations to interview at and you are already going to cancel some? You are a gangsta!

I would write them man, because (although unlikely that they would ever remember), you never know when you will encounter these folks. Rheum is a relatively small field, and I'm sure we will all run into each other in the future at conferences and so forth, so you don't want to burn any bridges before even starting your career.

Programs understand that people cancel. At first I felt guilty too, but you know what? They will just give my spot for interview to someone hangin in their limbo stack and that person may be super excited to interview there! Sooner is better than later so future interviewees can schedule in time.

Good luck :luck:

I know that for residency, one should take any positive feedback/ranked to match calls with a grain of salt, but do you guys think this applies to fellowship as well? I mean there are 2-4 spots instead of 30 and the Rheum departments for the most part are small, so I would think that after an "intimate" interview with essentially the whole dept it would be poor form to lead candidates on...any thoughts? Any experiences? BTW MGH now increased their quota to 2 applicants! Wonder why. Good luck with interviews everyone :D

Rheumor, where do we check quotas of programs?
No more interviews from now? :scared:

Just look search under Rheumatology fellowship, pick your state, choose your program and it should be listed. As far as more interviews, I dunno. I think there are still programs sending out some. I actually caved in and called MGH and they told me they had not sent invitations out yet...looking at prior posts, some programs were still inviting into April. Good luck!

I've had one interview. It was very friendly and relaxed, mostly discussions of
"why rheum?",
"where do you see yourself in 5 years?",
"are you interested in clinical/bench research, why/why not?",
"do you have a particular disease in mind you would like to study/specialize in?",
and of course, the dreaded, "what questions do you have for me?"

The first IV or two this stuff is fun to talk about, but once you're trying to force it for the 7th interviewer of the day it's hard to feel sincere

As the day went on I kind of went off my stock talking points and spent more time in discussion of what these people see as the future of rheum, what job prospects are like in their area for academics vs. private practice, what their fellows have gone on to do, what they focus on in their practice, etc. After all, the people you're talking to are experienced rheumatologists with a more knowledgable eye on the field than yours, so even though it's an interview you can still learn something about the field from them!

I've had three interviews so far and I agree with you drfunktacular, by the last interviewer (who at two places I went to was the PD!) you are just tired of talking about yourself!

The main questions I have gotten were:
1) Tell me about yourself
2) Why rheum?
3) Where do you see yourself in 15-20 years (one guy asked me where do I see myself in 30 years...I wanted to say retired but didn't given the fact that he was like 60 and still working :) )
4) Where else are you applying?
5) Why our program?
6) Do you have any questions for me?

I have not gotten any questions directly asking me about my research (watch, I just jinxed myself). Honestly, I think the programs already have an idea of where they are going to rank you prior to the interview, based on your credentials. The interview just solidifies this "hunch." Anyway, I plan on going on 7-8 interviews, and am still waiting to hear back from 3 programs (Stanford, MGH, UCLA). Any word yet from these programs for anyone? Any favorites yet (probably too early though)? :luck:
