just wondering has anyone who interviewed in january heard back from the Admissions committee yet. I called the school and they said we should be receiving something sometime this week

Is it true that place is a sh*thole?

I just got an invite but am thinking about declining because everyone I have talked to (that has interviewed) said it sucked.

I wouldn't go by what people say. I heard similar stuff before I interviewed too. But I was pleasantly surprised and rather like the school. Its definitely not a **** hole.
Go and see for yourself before making your decision

I take that to mean you already caught a "whale". If so don't hesitate to throw the fish back - hopefully I'll catch one too.

Cheers

well, cms was a last resort but i happened to get in a couple other places - so rather than sit on one of your guys' spots - like some other peeps around these threads - i just declined the spot so that one of you chaps who wants to go there has a chance - good luck guys

Thank you sir! 😀

Also forgot to add: Did you get it by e-mail or by ye old postman?

When I interviewed there I remember approaching the weekend with the same attitude... heard bad things, etc etc. I will admit that I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw at the school. Ever since the name change and probational scandal, they've really been making huge strides. Their anatomy lab is very nice, the clinical sites are great sites, and their match list is impressive.

The school is further from Chicago than people always seem to expect, but its not too far. The immediate surrounding area is admittedly boring, but its 40 minutes to Chicago, so that's where you can find your excitement.

Regardless I know its reputation among pre-meds is a bit low, and I can understand why it would be near the bottom of people's lists. But I know it's reputation among residency directors is much better than its reputation in pre-allo forums 😉

Anyway, it's at least worth a serious look.

Same song and dance that you hear from every low-tier school...

...where's their matchlist?

Well, to be honest, I'm choosing UIC over RFU as well... but that probably has a lot to do with tuition and location as well. I'll let the match list speak for itself.

2005

No, it really does not suck that bad. Its location is not the "OOOHH, AHHHHH" of living in Chicago, no doubt. Sure, it does not have its own school, but that opens up many downtown Chicago rotation possibilities! Its tuition is that of a private school = high. No, its not Harvard, Yale, Hopkins, Stanford, etc. However, when it gets down to faculty, student body, labs, boards scores and match list, RFUMS is a sleeper that silently kicks booty!

lol, I need to start popping in to these threads from time to time to dispell these myths. Is RFU a sh*thole? Hell no! A large part of the academic facilities here were built in the last 10 years and are awesome. The dorms are only 5 years old and provide the best environment for a student that I can imagine.

South of the school is some of the richest suburbs in chicago, and while north of the school isn't the greatest area, but what are you coming here for? The campus is extremely secure and friendly, our match list is incredibly awesome, and our board scores are above the national average. Plus, most 3rd and 4th years move to whereever they want downtown since most of their affiliate hospitals will be right there.

nothing in the mail for me today in new york. january interview. anyone hear anything today?

thank you VERY MUCH for speaking up! it is good to hear real opinions from people who actually know what they are talking about (people who attend the school, know people who have or who have interviewed/visited it).

i was also there that week, and the adcom hadn't met yet. they were to meet during the last few days of january, and i was told that we'd most likely be reviewed in that group.

What is the date on your letter? Also, what is the post-mark date on the envelope?

I interviewed on the 18th and haven't gotten anything, although the mail in my University dorm is quite slow and I do remember it taking a while for me to receive RFU's interview packet invitation when they sent it to me initially

Still keeping my fingers crossed :luck: :luck: :luck:

I interviewed last week of January too. I got a letter today which I'm trying to make sense of.

Here's what it said:

"The admissions committee wishes to inform you that while the cannot offer you acceptance at this time, your application will continue to be reviewed at future committee meetings. You are an outstanding candidate, however only a limited number of acceptances were available in the month of January.

The Admissions Office will inform you immediately via letter when your status changes"

Is that just saying I'm on hold? The little booklet they gave us on interview day said that you recieve a letter only if you were accepted or rejected and you would recieve an email if your admission decision was pending. - See page 5. Well i didnt get an email. Has that changed? Did anyone else get similar letter?

Thanks

hey orth,
i interviewed at the end of december and got that same letter the following week. i assume that they just didn't have the time to get to your file - although they probably do have good intentions for you as i got accepted last week - you'll just have to wait a little longer to hear confirmation. i'll offer a tentative congrats...

Hey for all of you who have gotten these most recent letters, who were your interviewers?

Thanks!

Interesting!! I got the letter exactly 1 week after my interview as well. I hope to GOD the next round is positive. By the way did you call them when you got the letter to clarify what it really meant? Or you just waited it out?

I called and they said that they simply wouldn't be possible to get to the file at their meeting but as far as they could tell, its looked good

i just got a letter today that was just like Orth2006's up there. looks like this is the end of the road...unless something miraculous happens. i don't know what this letter means but i'm pretty bummed now.

i interviewed with stutzmann, kiken, and kemp.

Hey guys, did anyone received this letter and got rejected?

do any of you take the metra? what is that like? i live in a Chicago suburb and really don't want to move....commute via car sucks, so i thought the train would at least give me a chance to study on the way to school...but my concern is that the station is 2 miles from the school...is there a shuttle? i don't mind walking/riding my bike but i am worried about the days that it is freezing/snowing/raining.

thanks for your input in advance!
🙂

so, has anyone else who interviewed during the last week of january heard anything?

also, does cms have an actual waitlist that people get put on, or do all people who are not accepted get the letter that orth2006 and others have received? anyone know? thanks. 👍

 I just got an acceptance n the mail today. I interivewed mid-November and got waitlisted in December. I got accepted in February. There is still hope. GOOD LUCK!!!

There has not been a waitlist in previous years (per Stephanie) but she said they are instituting one this year. Therefore, I guess the answer is yes, there is a waitlist....maybe that mystery email is due to the fact that they have not got the waitlist thing ironed out just yet. I know they are making many changes over there in general, so I guess we all just have to be patient. I was going to call them tomorrow about financial aid info (still have not gotten any paperwork for that 🙁 )....perhaps if I am feeling courageous I will ask them about that mystery email.... 😉

CONGRATS!!!

When you say "waitlisted", are you refering to the type of letter I got (see above). Did you get a similar letter? - I know cubs08 said he/she got the same letter.

when in nov. (i was there 11/15)
any other acceptances under your belt? 🙂

There is a shuttle. And some people do commute via the train, although it's a long ride (plan to study) and it can get rather costly. The shuttle (it's a van) runs to the lake bluff stop in the morning to pick up people at 7:40 and 8:30. It goes back at 3,4,5, and 6 in the afternoon/evening. It's convenient, but if you like a flexible schedule or to study after hours at the library it doesn't work so hot. Although your fellow students are bound to be cool enough to take you there now and then. It doesn't run on weekends though. Not a lot of students are willing to put up with spending about 3 hours of their day in transit everyday (actually some quality study time), but if you are dedicated to coming to every class and to getting up early all the time, then it works fine. What I have noticed about students who live downtown: You only see them during tests or parties...

I think their denial of a waitlist is kind of an exaggeration. They don't have a ranked waitlist, that's true. There is no specific order that the remaining applicants will be accepted in... but they do have I suppose a "waitlist pool" of applicants they like, and who go before the committee again frequently. They subsequently meet and decide over who to take out of the "waiting pool"... at least thats my impression of the way the whole thing works, but I may be wrong. They're starting a waitlist this year? That's good to hear. Things happened last year that lead me to believe its something they really needed.

are you a current RFU student? do you live in Chicago?

I'm in their AP program, and I live in waukegan currently. But if I do stay here next year I'm very seriously considering a move downtown. It's too quiet for me up here.

I interviewed on January 5th, and I still haven't heard anything from them....no email, no letter of any kind. I was under the impression that they were at least going to send an email even if no decision was made at this meeting. I'll wait a few days before I really start to worry, but has anyone else not heard anything?

I interviewed on Jan 20, and received an acceptance on Feb 3. Two weeks exactly. I have no clue why they acted so fast. I got the impression it would be a lot longer.

Interview 1/9/06 Acceptance 2/6/06

i interviewed 11/30 and have gotten passed up in both December and January. Should I be worried? I wonder what my chances will be like considering they interview all the way through the spring...any and all comforting words accepted : :scared:
