I just recieved my FIRST interview invite! :) Meharry on the 4th of March. Anyone else going to be there on that day?

PS: how coincidental that my 500th post was the one with the best news! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

Yes it is. It's an awesome school! The students are really happy and get a thorough education. I heard some guy there pulled a perfect on USMLE 1 last year; but I don't know for sure. What I do know is that David Satcher was the dean there till a few years ago.

A few asians and whites matriculate at Meharry every year. They are a primary-care based school and are big on catering to the needs of medically underserved minority communities. Good luck and definitely relax and be yourself at your interview.

    imtiaz,

No need to worry about your ethnicity at your interview. If you've visited interviewfeedback.com you know that there is still alot of ignorance and misinformation from applicants about Meharry. I interviewed there in January and am a Caucasian with very average stats across the board and was placed in the acceptance range a week ago (not sure if this is a good thing, but I think its better than being rejected). My best advice to you is to know the history and mission of Meharry and why you think learning in a multicultural environment would benefit you as a future doctor and your classmates. I personally loved the supportive nature of the faculty and students (they pay for prep classes either through Kaplan or Princeton Review for the USMLE step 1) and think that with the combination of a small class size and the supportive family type atmosphere a medical education at Meharry would equip you as a doctor with all the tools to meet an evolving multicultural society. On the downside, their facilities were a little underfunded (in terms of research activities), but they have a partnership with Vanderbilt that allows you to use their library and (I think) work with professors at Vanderbilt who do clinical and basic science research. Anyway, go out there and show them your hunger for becoming a doctor and that you know what Meharry is all about and your going to do fine. Best of luck. Peace

imtiaz, I interviewed there on the 15th of October, and I was fairly impressed. It was definitely nicer than the first school I interviewed at, which will remain nameless (though I am sure any resourceful SDN'er can search the history of posts from around that time and find out quite easily, that is if they realy want to know). Anyway, they focus on serving the underserved, so you may wanna tailor your story to suit that. You don't necessarily have to be black to get in there, as there were a few white and asian and latin students mixed in amongst the classes it seemed. Overall, it is a much nicer school than I expected and it is in a really great city. Hope you do great there. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I interviewed there last year when I was going through this wonderful process and this is what I remember and found out. Any applicant who applies there who is not black is at a disadvantage because while there are some white/asian students they only make up 20% of the class. The problem is the majority of their applicants are not black so therefor you are competing for maybe 20-30 spots that are reserved for non-blacks. So while this makes it more difficult it is a major accomplishment to get an interview so now it is up to you to convince the school why they have to have you. When you interview it is very important to realize the purpose of the school is to train doctors who are interested in treating the underserved so it is extremely important to focus on how this is you goal in life. Also I was asked by both interviewers if I was comfortable working with minorities so you need to have a good answer for this question and hopefully some experience where you can show you work well with a wide variety of people. So it is great you got an interview and like every med school in this country it will give you a good education that will allow you to become a successful doctor.

i didnt know much about meharry when i applied, but reading over their website has impressed me more with the school. its pretty small, like 80 students. im pretty psyched that i got an interview being an asian, but i dont have stellar stats by any means. it just goes to show how random the process is. (i never understood that until now). anyhow, i do like their safety net program for uninsured and underinsured patients. they have some collaborative effort going with vanderbilt U, i dont really know the details about it but it can only be a good thing, right?

anyhow, for all you folks who interviewed there last year, how many of you got an acceptance? id like to get a rough idea of where i stand.

I was put in the acceptance range (waitlist basically). I got in other places so I never responded to their request for additional info and therefor I never moved of the wait list.

And they haven't posted since becoming a transplant fellow... apparently when you work >100 hours a week you don't have time for sdn. Who knew.
