There is some vitriol circulating on this website regarding the GPR at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford, I wanted to start a new thread for prospective residents to ask anything regarding the program that can be answered by a former resident who had a vastly different experience than that of the "PSA:" thread.

Not that it's relevant at all, but 20 years ago, I did a 2 year GPR there and loved it.

Whether or not that that program helped shape me and how I practice is a good thing or not?

Not to spread any additional vitriol, but my honest feedback as a resident there within the last 2 years is that this place was a terrible experience. I won't get into their dirty laundry, but I really hope the program made some serious staff changes.
There were no specialists to learn from, except that a periodontist would come and show a powerpoint once a month. Residents did not get the opportunity to place implants despite what is says on their website. There is no endodontist or oral surgeon associated with the program either. They don't teach IV sedation.
I went into that program with an open mind and wanting to learn everything, but I'm so sad to say it was a waste of a year. The only thing I really learned was how to extract teeth and make dentures.
You will truly be better off as an associate in a real dental practice. I learned so much more in six months of an associateship after that awful residency. I would give almost anything to have that year of my life back. Trust me when I say this - do not waste your time here if you expect a high quality program.

DDSJOAT, I can understand why you would want to defend the program. I went there myself years ago under the old management of Drs. Mitchell and Schmidt and it was nothing short of the best dental educational experience I've ever had. Unfortunately, the hospital got bought out by a conglomerate, and in the middle of the 2016 residency year, literally every old instructor was fired completely without warning. Any experiences with St. Francis GPR before 2016 are completely different from the new resident experience.

I get the feeling that @DDSJOAT is someone currently affiliated w/ the program. I won't suggest any names. There is simply no other reason why someone thinks their experience from 20 years ago is relevant or can compete w/ the experience of residents who are currently at the program or graduated recently. It's bizarre and the exact type of gaslighting and lying that happens at this program.

1. I have no reason to

1. I have no reason to lie, and cannot fathom where you get off insinuating that the program depends on gaslighting and lies
2. As a former resident who excelled greatly, I am still close to the current administration
3. I know there are two chief residents next year (2021-2022) , which speaks magnitudes to the current experience the residents are having... regardless of your unfortunate experience in years past

And, gaslighting, ladies and gentlemen.
