hey guys,
I apologize for the confusing words.

1. What is the average salary for oral maxillofacial surgeons right out of specialty program?
2. What is the salary difference between OMF surgeons who work at private practice and those who work at NYU Medical center as an oral maxillofacial surgeon/faculty at the dental school? (NYU Med ctr. is just an example).

I am going to be a first year at a dental school upcoming fall and my goal is to become an OMFS. I am just researching about what kind of opportunities are out there. Seriously, OMFS is my ultimate dream but only thing that hinders me is the amount of time it takes to become an OMFS. I hope there is enough financial compensation for those extra years at school.

An itemized would certainly help with our answers!?!

An itemized list would help too.

yeah. I want to be a professor and at the same time treat patients.

Is it really just me?? I don't know why ppl are so confused about my question.

Yes, I want to become a professor in OMFS.

My question was, HOW MUCH DO OMFS make?? WHat is their salary god damn it??? haha

just kidding.

There is no need to get angry, a good teacher doesn't get mad at their students when they don't get what they are teaching them do they? No, they don't. A good teacher finds a better way to get their point across.

Okay let's call off the dogs, I think the kid's had enough.

Honestly, I don't know if there are figures for this. The OMFS program driector at Highland said, to a classmate of mine, that you'd have to be insane to get into academic OMFS these days considering the ridiculous salaries people are pulling down in private practice though.

You broke too early. You have no chance at OMFS. LOL

Now what was your question again? Could you state it in an essay type of question?

Sorry, one more midterm in two days and it has been a month long for us...phew.

Dear armorshell,
Alright. That answers part of my question. Thank you for sharing the info even though it's something I've already known. I wanted rough figures that illustrate the salary difference.

and for those of you who criticized me on this forum, I would like to say,
1. I don't have to tell you why I am genuinely interested in OMFS before I ask questions about its financial reward.
2. I hope you are kidding regmata because this is just an internet forum. Please stop being judgemental over internet.

2. You obviously are not the sharpest knife in the drawer and an internet forum is about the best place there is to be judgemental...but I don't recall judging you till just now.

Hospital settings... from 275-325+ for experienced OMFS.

A conservative estimate would be 800,000-900,000 a year.

I tried google search and I find different estimates everywhere.
One website says,
"Median annual earnings of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons were
$145,600+ in 2004. The middle 50 percent earned $145,600+. The lowest 10 percent earned less than $75,900, and the highest 10 percent earned more than$145,600+." (http://science.education.nih.gov/Li...+Maxillofacial+Surgeon?OpenDocument&ShowTab=2&)

but doesn't GP make $140000+ on average?

On http://www.physicianssearch.com/physician/salary2.html
the average income of a OMFS is $208,340.

http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/bestjobs/2006/snapshots/102.html
says about $210000 a year

on http://www.myplan.com/careers/db/1.php?onet=29-1022.00, average income for OMFS is about $165000.

Are these figures reliable? Because those numbers are only slightly more than what I hear GPs make annually.

Money isn't a big factor in my decision to pursue dentistry but I would like to know in advance. I'd really appreciate your help.

400k - 500k in a decent private practice
at least thats the oral surgeons i've shadowed

a professor of OMFS at a dental school will make somewhere in the ball park of 150-300K.
A OMFS looking to associate right out of residency will probably make
200-250K I would think.
A OMFS that has a successful practice can earn upwards of 1 mill. although this is doing very well

These are ballpark figures at best. Hope that gets you started.

I officially declare this thread dead.

Thank you for your input. That solves my curiousity.

For people posting the incomes of surgeons they personally know, I'm a little curious as to how you find out. None of the dentists I've shadowed/spoken with have told me what they earn, and I certainly wouldn't ask them.

Ask the front office ladies (or men) if you cool with them and have the ability to ask that kind of question.

my dad and two uncles are all specialists. I ask them and they tell me. I don't spread the info though. Lets just say that there is potential to make 100k and there is potential to make 10 million dollars a year.

oh iicic...so i guess it all depends on individuals...
I guess the true estimation of my future income really depends on how good I will be as an OMFS.

But 10million is lil bit too crzy...are you sure about that? even 80-900000 is too crzy to believe.

800,000 in Camel Cash may sound like alot, but it's been said that money, whether it features the likeness of an anthropomorphic camel or not, can't buy happiness.

I totally agree! and I am in it for the amazing things that you can do to improve people's lives. I would appreciate the financial reward of the career but it's defintely not my priority.

Why are people so mean on this forum? All I said was that I want to do OMFS in the future because of the good things I could do with it. Some of you should try to become a better person before becoming a dentist. Ridiculing others who seek advice does not make a good dentist.

Flat 4, can you exactly state what is wrong with my statement?

I decided not to care anymore but I just had to say this once.

Also, I mean isn't financial reward part of your decision to excel and become a successful professional? Money cannot buy happiness but it will help you live a good life and allow you to share with others.

It's a part of almost everyones choice to pursue one of the professions, but they don't run around claiming that they don't care about it.

Ahem:

I didnn't say i don't care about it. I said not my priority. OK. I 'll change it. "Not in the top of my priority list"

"starting first yr in dentistry next fall"
+
"ultimate goal to become OMFS"

do you even know what being a dentist is all about?
and then
do you even know what being a OMFS is all about?
because i don't get it when people say something is their ultimate dream when they don't really know what it is all about.

ok that was just my opinion

but back to your question. you ask about income and hope their will be monetary compensation for the long years of studying.. if there wasn't, why do you think it's so competitive?

Obviously the "dream" is a premature ejaculation based on salary. Throw this guy the bone, YES! Oral surgeons can make tons of coin! In private practice you will likely make 200 -500 k within the first few years of practice. In the hospital based setting you will make a bit less, but you will be compensated with the continuous ego boost by poo pooing on dental students, residents, and others for their lack of knowledge.

its safe to say they make AT LEAST minimum wage.
