They are going to have a mandatory 2 year period for research or MPH.

How do you guys feel about this and what is the advantage?

Personally, I think surgery residency is already long enough.
 
i thought MPH only took 1 year post MD.

is the 2nd yr manditory for epi or outcomes research?
 
Good for building future leadership in the specialty. Especially with all of the advances in genetics, molecular biology, and technology. Perhaps more surgery based on evidence and not on anecdote. Maybe good also for keeping/recruiting more women to GS who would otherwise not (or think they won't) be able to have a family?

Not a bad break to recover from intern year and PGY-2 either. 🙂

Two years is a long requirement though. Definitely not for everyone.
