Saving a rec Letter to use when you need it?

Hello,

I'm doing summer research and I wanted to get a rec from my PI. I'm applying next spring and I think it'd be weird to ask for the letter a year from now. So should I just have the letter sent to one of those online things? Also, maybe if I want to use the letter for other things, can I just send it out of the online service? I'm not too sure how that works. Thanks!
