Apéritif
A crowd gathers at the crime scene tape, craning their necks to catch a glimpse of the man in plain clothes standing among the uniformed officers. He looks troubled. If they only knew. In his mind he traces back through the previous night, piecing the scene together and feeling himself fall into that familiar darkness. The victims live again, and the gun is in his hand. He sees through the killer's eyes.
This is MY design.
------
Jack Crawford had the Chesapeake Ripper always in the back of his mind, but he is quiescent, and the Minnesota Shrike has taken another victim. He needs help. Help that only one man can provide. For Jack, there is only the end goal. Only the hunt for the killer. No matter what is lost on the road there.
For Will, there is darkness in empathizing with a killer. Greater darkness when he feels he understands them completely. The stag appears to him again and again. Who, or what, it represents, he is unsure. His dogs sense his restlessness and form a protective circle around him. The knock on his door is not unexpected. He has been watching the news.
----------
The girl is young, and beautiful. Just like the others.
"He loves them?" asks Jack, incredulous at Will's analysis, given in a halting whisper, filled with horror.
"He loves one of them," Will replies, averting his eyes from Jack's prying gaze.
"He's eating them!"

Jack Crawford's boss was not in favor of putting big name cases on the shoulders of an unstable man. But Jack needed Will. So Jack called in a favor from a renowned psychologist. Someone he had utmost faith in.
------------
"I don't find you that interesting," said Will, though the meal his host had prepared was delicious at least.
Hannibal smiled.
"You will."
