Both caused by S. pyogenes, yet seem to have the same clinical manifestations. Any future ID specialist want to take a shot at this?

Scarlet fever = strep pharyngitis + scarlitiniform exanthem (aka the sandpaper rash)

Rheumatic fever = post-infectious sequelae of strep pharyngitis characterized by the Jones criteria

Worst response ever. "Characterized by Jones criteria." Probably the most useless post I've ever seen.

Rheumatic fever = evidence of recent Strep pharyngitis and two major or one major and 2 minor criteria.
Major criteria: carditis, migratory polyarthritis, erythema marginatum, chorea, subcutaneous nodules
Minor criteria: fever, arthralgia, elevated acute phase reactants (ESR<CRP), prolonged PR interval on ECG
Most of the symptoms are caused by molecular mimicrcy.

Scarlet fever = from Group A Strep that produces pyrogenic exotoxins. Findings: pharyngitis plus circumoral pallor, erythematous papular rash diffusely that feels like sandpaper, Pastia's lines (rash over flexor surfaces of arms)

You don't need to know those details until the Peds shelf exam during 3rd year. For Step 1 just need to know

Why? If you're reading this post, you're presumably connected to the Internet. Thus, using Google to look up "Jones criteria" is not outside the realm of your capabilities.

He's just practicing belittling people with acceptable responses for when he's an attending.

I see. Interestingly enough, most attendings I've worked with would take my approach and tell us to, you know, look something up on our own, especially anything involving the words "criteria" or "triad."

Using that logic, then anyone reading the OP's thread should have said google it.

If you're going to respond with an answer, at least give the full answer. If not, then don't bother replying or just tell him/her to google it haha. Just sayin.

Rehumatic fever is characterized by the physiological rise of core temperature following the successful treatment of zombie plague or other undead illness with low body temperature.

Hi could I just ask, is carditis a complication of rheumatic heart disease? Or would there be overlap as the definition of carditis is inflammation of the heart, which in itself is what rheumatic heart disease is? I'm a bit confused by it, as i'm doing a presentation on the complications of rheumatic heart disease.
