Hello all!!!

May I ask what's the schedule at dental school, can you choose your own schedule ( day or night) or your have to go whatever school wanted???? Also how many hours per week ? how many units per semester ? Does it count like when we're in undergrad at University????

Another question about the LOR, can I request recommendation letter from professor at Community College or have to be at University?????

Thanks all!!!

LOL @ day or night. Its more like day AND night in dental school 😀

is that mean you'll stay all day at school ???

Most schools are between 30 - 40 hrs./week of class time (something like Monday thru Friday, 8:00 - 5:00), not counting extra time spent studying in the labs after hours. Also, everywhere I know sets your schedule for you.

yea....you know those lazy undergrad days where u have class either in the morning OR the afternoon...OR not at all?? midafternoon naps??? having all day to recover from a hangover cuz u only have one class at 2pm? kiss it all goodbye....thats exactly why there a "senioritis" thread on here

lol... pick your own hours.. i'm sorry, it was an honest question. nope you're basically an indentured servant of the dental school, you come and go as they tell you to. sometimes parts of your schedule will change with 24 hours notice and you have to cancel anything you're doing and be at the school. 6-8 hours/day mon-fri, think a full time job, except when you get home you're not done because you have to study or do something else for school. I think we have like 21 credits, not sure of the exact number. it's a whole different monster than undergrad 🙂

Are the classes really mandatory though for the first two years? For instance, in med school most places don't take attendance and as long as you learn the material you are fine...is it different at dental school? I'm the kind of person who gets very little out of class time and learns when I am studying alone.

Some schools don't take attendance, some schools do. It really depends on where you go.

It depends where you go. You notice that the 2010 Columbia students are preparing for a load of academics. Temple, on the other hand is a clinical school and not really much of an academic powerhouse, this works for some not for others. I just finished the first year which consisted of half-days (done by 11:30am) Mon, Wed, and Fri, during the Fall semester, and Mondays off during the the Spring semester (The second year at Temple is more along the lines of other dental schools, ie 29 credit hours a semester).

What about LOR, can ask my professor at CC ????

I had two LOR's from CC science professors, one from the University science professor, one from a dentist, and one other from a supervisor of some volunteer work I was involved in. No problems in the interviews with my LOR's.

Ready for me to sound like I know what I'm talking about even though I haven't started school yet? 🙄

From what I've heard, it really changes quite a bit from year to year. Though it varies across schools, the first year is very much the 9-5 class, evening studying schedule people have mentioned, whereas second year has some class, but LOTS of time in the preclin lab where you're figuring out how to do this whole dentistry thing. Then a lot of said that in a traditional school where academics/clinical is somewhat balanced, the last two years are more of a dental office schedule; you're in clinic 9-5 working on patients, with some class time where they go into depth about various procedures (and perhaps some practice management stuff).

Is this accurate at all....?

To me, I'd rather have it vary like that from year to year....the change will keep me from burning out and make the time go by more quickly 👍
