Quick question. Are you guys scheduling interviews as soon as you get an invitation? Is it rude to wait a week or two? I think it would be easier to make my schedule once I see where I am being interviewed and how it lays out geographically.

Thoughts appreciated.

I'm scheduling interviews at programs which are isolated geographically from others I've applied to, because I figure I won't be piggy-backing those together with other visits anyway. For the more clustered regions (i.e. most of the east coast) I'm holding off for a bit to see how it works out.

Just curious (not applying this year, but...) How would programs react if you requested a reschedule? I'd probably just want to schedule interviews as soon as I got them. (Don't dates fill up?). But, since travel costs are so crazy I would do anything to maximize the clustering.

The tact that I'm taking is to schedule early. I schedule the interview within 1-2 days of receiving the invite. That way programs know that I'm interested and that I'm not just leaving them hanging. Think about it, by not scheduling an interview you're either indicating that you're taking your time in putting your schedule together or that you're probably not ever going to schedule the interview. How is a program going to know? They don't know! And they're probably going to start the next round of invitations and the days you were interested in may be gone.

There is absolutely no harm done in rescheduling an interview. These folks know that many of us will be criss-crossing the country and we need to keep things as efficient and economical as possible. I've already rescheduled one interview and the program coordinator was more than happy to accommodate. In fact, I explained why I was rescheduling and she said she completely understood. Rescheduling is a common practice--my friends from last year's class applying to IM, ortho, anesthesia, etc. all rescheduled once and sometimes twice and none felt like it was a mark against them.

If you don't take my word for it, read Iserson's. This is the approach he recommends. And I figure that he probably knows more than the average med student about interviewing.

The individuals who are handling interview scheduling are by-and-large clerical people; when you happened to schedule your interview and how that corresponds to when the invite was given out is hardly likely to make it onto the radar of the folks who make decisions. These people aren't fools, they understand that you've got more than one interview to juggle.

You will be getting interviews like mad coming up. DO NOT schedule interviews right when you get the email, b/c you'll get more in teh same area, and inevitably will find conflicts. wait until you get a region in general, tehn pick a week block to go to that area. For example, i scheduled Mount Sinai early for NY, but then I got NYU and Columbia and realized they wouldnt all work out, so I had to change my Mount Sinai interview.

Yeah, I agree with Jackie1 there. I get the feeling that it is in no way poor form to reschedule interviews after you've scheduled a date. When I've phoned programs to schedule interviews, I've asked that same question and they completely understand the absolute chaos we're working with when it comes to finding dates that work. Plus, if it's a big city like Chicago or NYC, it's way more fiscally sound to make one big momma trip.

Great question!
