Hi,

I was wondering about my school list as I'm preparing to apply this upcoming cycle.
Caveats: I took 2 MCATs (512-->518 two months apart); ORM.

A lot of research since freshman year at college (2000+hrs)
- a poster presentation at national conference
- one first author publication at lower impact journal (IF ~5).
Translational research at a hospital lab (2000+ hrs)
- one co-authorship (5th author) at high impact journal (IF >20).

One year working at an NGO in sub-Saharan Africa. (I manage a project that provides ultrasound and interventions to pregnant mothers, but I'm not sure if it counts as 'clinical,' since I'm more of a supervisor than an actual health care provider.)

I'd really appreciate any input!

I have done about 300 hrs shadowing and 400 hrs clinical volunteering, but most of the clinical volunteering were from abroad in summers.

I like the NGO work, but if you were more of a supervisor and really didn't interact with patients, then you do need to get this type of experience now.
I'm feeling a bit sanguine about your chances. I recommend:
USF Morsani
U IA (maybe)
U MI (maybe)
UCF (maybe)
Duke
U Cincy
U VM
Pitt
Mayo
Miami
St. Louis
Albany
Albert Einstein
Rochester
Rush
Rosy Franklin
BU
MCW
Hofstra
NYMC
VCU
EVMS
Wake Forest
Jefferson
Temple
Drexel
Creighton
George Washington
Georgetown
Emory
USC/Keck
Tulane
Dartmouth
Loyola
Netter
Oakland-B
ALL SUNYs

Uniformed Services University/Hebert (just be aware of the military service commitment)

Thank you both for the input!

Do you think interacting with patients at current NGO setting would be sufficient and considered clinical?

Can't speak for other schools, but I think at my school it would be considered clinical exposure. Sounds like a really cool experience.

My concern on the NGO work would be from AAMC Executive Summary on Clinical Experience as below. Just what education and certification did you have to be a position to be supervising ultrasound and intervention for pregnant mothers? If you managed a project in support of such work as opposed to actual clinical interaction, you may in fact be better off.

I hire community health workers with certificates that allow them to perform sonography, and connect them with American doctors to train them further for quality control purposes, but I do not hold any certificates or license myself. If my job is to manage them and organize their fieldwork, would it still raise red flags?
Our main job is to let mothers know of their expected delivery date and refer them to hospitals if there are any concerns.

I think you'd be OK to include that on your app, but that's nonclinical volunteering. You need to get both clinical volunteering and shadowing experience.
