Help!! I can't figure out where I should apply. I'm a Texas resident, 3.5gpa 35 MCAT, below avg ECs and volunteer work, extensive international travel, and I worked in the oil patch for 2 years.

Here's my list so far:

Baylor
UT - Southwestern
UTHouston
UTSan Antonio
UCSD
Tulane

UCSD and Baylor seem like a long shot, but I guess I'll give them a try. What are some other 2nd tier schools that I should shoot for? I can't stand the cold, so it can't be too far north. Thanks!!

You are probably will get into Texas and it will be tough to turn that down.... so pick a few dream schools (other than UCSD) 😉

How about Duke, Harvard, Hopkins, Vanderbilt, George Washington, Emory?

i'd definitely add emory to the list.

some others to consider: miami, wake forest, the virginia schools (though some may be tough to get in for out-of-staters.

Those are the only Texas schools to which you applied? Your numbers are good (particularly MCAT), but I don't think they're THAT good where you should blow off UTMB, TTU, and TAMU altogether. I understand that spending four years in Lubbock isn't everyone's dream, but if you are looking for more safety schools, they are (or were, maybe) right before your eyes. Granted, you will probably get into one of your three choices, but nothing is a sure thing in the app process.

Thanks for the tips, guys. I hadn't even thought about emory, vanderbilt, and wake forest although they'd probably all suit me well. I will probably add TTU to my list, but I bleed orange, so I can't see myself going to TAMU. 😀

I agree. Add all the TX schools to that list, and add all the schools that you would want to go to if you had to chose between a TX and "....." school. 😉

i thought of the prospect of me getting into no schools except tamu or ttu -- i think i wouldve been looking for reasons why to not go med school. thats why i decided not to apply there.
