Short answer: Don't put too much thought into this. The VCU thing is a little weird. The only time this might get sketchy is if you've recently jumped ship from another health profession (especially post-rejection).

New requirement for VCU next cycle: LOR from your mom verifying that you did in fact want to be a dentist at the age of 5.

admissions boards want to accept those candidates they think will stay in school. proof of commitment is in a) work ethic (GPA) and b) passion (volunteer/experiences).
doesn't matter how early or late you were in hopping on board
