Short answer: Don't put too much thought into this. The VCU thing is a little weird. The only time this might get sketchy is if you've recently jumped ship from another health profession (especially post-rejection).

When I was 10, my calling was baseball.
When I was 15, my calling was girls.
When I was 20, my calling was music.
When I was 25, my calling was dentistry.

admissions boards want to accept those candidates they think will stay in school. proof of commitment is in a) work ethic (GPA) and b) passion (volunteer/experiences).
doesn't matter how early or late you were in hopping on board
