I'd love to dust off my trumpet and start playing again. I read on these boards awhile ago that Jefferson has a chamber orchestra run by Dr. Fenderson. I'm hoping to stay in the Philadelphia area, but does anyone know of any other schools with a band or orchestra, out of curiosity?

Seriously?! That would be amazing. I really want to join an ensemble again.

I know that Columbia has a performing theatre group. Many med schools have a capella choirs, I myself am a member of a med school vocal group. I imagine that there are a number of med schools that have instrumental groups. If your med school does not have such a group, then take the initiative and start one.

columbia probably have all the arts groups out there

👍

Cool to see someone else who plays trumpet on here. I've been playing trumpet for 13 years of my life and was wondering about ensembles in med school as well. From my understanding, many med schools seem to have student ensembles, etc.

University of Rochester did have some small orchestral-type group last year that was primarily physicians, students, etc.

I'm willing to bet that places near major orchestras or music schools (Philly, Chicago, L.A., etc.) will have SOMETHING going on.

I personally hope to get a small brass quintet or something going once a week if I can, but I also don't want to over-commit to something I can just put away for a few years and come back to later.

:luck:

Exactly, the key is not to overcommit. Provide yourself with an activity that you enjoy and that clears your mind of medicine for a few hours. My a capella group practices 2 or 3 hours per week which is fine. But I am a third year student now so I have even let a capella go this year but will try to rejoin the group next year if possible.

I also joined a triathlon group during my first and second year of med school. I like to work out anyway so I just tailored my work outs to the triathlon, running, biking, and swimming.

Find a couple of activities that you enjoy and you will have a more balanced and happy life in med school.

more than a chamber orchestra, I think your best bet is a band (I am not aware of any schools with a band though). For some reason, med students tend to be string players and trumpet+string orchestra=not so good. A brass ensemble would be perfect, and I'd think that would be more a random event of whatever school you end up in. A few schools do have chamber orchestras (mostly strings as far as I know), Jefferson being one of them as you already mentioned.

Hey Bam, did you ever get to play under Frederick Fennell? I got to play with him at Interlochen a few times and he was the coolest old dude ever!

No, but I did see his last concert ever conducted at Eastman just a little before he died. It was amazing. What a passion for music and sharing his love of life with others.

I did conducting under Hunsberger though, and that was cool. Also got to perform for Karel Husa (Music for Prague) and see John Williams conduct his movie music with an Eastman orchestra.

I miss those days...
