Hey everyone,

I am putting together a preliminary list of schools I am interested in applying to and the first thing I am considering is location. I am from NYC and I would like to stay in/near metropolitan areas. Places like Stony Brook and UCONN are good even though they are somewhat secluded since there are things to do around there. I guess I'm a bit freaked out about going to the "middle of nowhere"

There are a bunch of schools in locations I don't personally prefer, but I would definately be interested in applying if the programs are very reputable. In my mind, all I can picture is farms surrounding these schools. Of the following, can you tell me which are popular on this forum or is a highly considered program?

Also, if I graduate from a NY school, can I get licensed in Cali and practice there?

University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry AL
University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry AZ
University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Dentistry AZ
Georgia Regents University College of Dental Medicine GA
University of Iowa College of Dentistry IA
Midwestern University - Illinois College of Dental Medicine-Illinois IL
Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine IL
Indiana University School of Dentistry IN
University of Kentucky College of Dentistry KY
University of Louisville School of Dentistry KY
Louisiana State University School of Dentistry LA
University of New England College of Dental Medicine ME
University of Minnesota School of Dentistry MN
Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health MO
University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry MO
The University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Dentistry MS
East Carolina University School of Dental Medicine NC
Creighton University School of Dentistry NE
University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Dentistry NE
University of Nevada, Las Vegas School of Dental Medicine NV
Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine OH
The Ohio State University College of Dentistry OH
University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry OK
Medical University of South Carolina James B. Edwards College of Dental Medicine SC
Meharry Medical College School of Dentistry TN
University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Dentistry TN
Roseman University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine UT
University of Utah School of Dentistry UT
Marquette University School of Dentistry WI
West Virginia University School of Dentistry WV

I think he's saying that school list are schools in less desirable places and wants to know if any of those schools are worth the environment? If so, Pitt is a pretty nice place.

My reading comprehension is crap apparently. Good call.

I interviewed at the University of Kentucky and was surprised how big Lexington was. Much bigger than I thought. Plus there is horse racing, so it has that going for it too! Louisville (and thus the University of Louisville) I think was about 45 minutes away and was in turn a short-ish drive from Cincinnati.

Case Western Reserve University was only a few miles from the heart of Cleveland, so keep that in mind as well. Creighton University was in the heart of Omaha, but other than that it's all corn from what I saw. Midwestern-Illinois is (if I remember correctly) 30-40 minutes away from Chicago, located in the suburbs.

For LSU, South Carolina, and Tennessee, expect southern college towns. LSU is located in Baton Rouge though, which is a short drive from New Orleans in case you have a week you just want to erase from your mind completely.

"In my mind, all I can picture is farms surrounding these schools"

Lol your perception of the rest of the u.s that isnt nyu is very skewed. Just glancing briefly, I can tell you that Minneapolis or Milwaukee are by no means rural... And not all California schools are in booming cities either.

There's a spreadsheet that classify how rural/urban each school is. I am on my phone so pm me later to remind me

"Can I practice in Cali"
Each states have their own list of regional exams they accept. For example, Cali has the wreb. And I don't think nyu accepts the wreb. But rumor is that Cali schools are planning to get rid of licensing exam if you come from a Cali school

LOL that's how people from NYC perceive the rest of the US.

hi sjv!

do you mind explaining it a little more for us noobs 🙁 im not really sure how licensing works at all. are ADEX and WREB the two exams you can take? and then are there separate state exams that are also taken?

You take the one pertaining to the state(s) you plan on practicing in which is really the major hurdle along with NBDE Part I/II. You can check each state's website for more information but that is pretty much the difficult part.

Remove SIU from your list. Unless your an IL resident there is almost no chance for you to go there.

Missouri School of Dentistry and Oral Health (MOSDOH) is in a very rural community and it's pretty much the middle of nowhere. If that's not your style, cross it off your list.

Lousiville is a cool town. I've really only driven through there but its' a big downtown area and very nice. U of Minnesota is in a metro of about 3.5 million people. I'm pretty sure you will find something to do. I hear they got electricity last week even...

In all fairness, the Missouri School of Dentistry & Oral Health MO for the first 2 years is in a rural, farming community--including a lot of Amish in the area. The last 2 years though are in St. Louis, metro area of 2.8 million...

Almost every school is in a city center of sorts. So i wouldn't worry about rural vs not. The most rural one I've been to was Marquette. That's only because maybe 30 minutes north you'd be in the woods, which I quite like.

Edit: Actually I think UK would be up there as well. The city is small compared to most. But it's beautiful and surrounded by my favorite type of farmland, pastures.

University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry is a highly regarded program in my opinion. They typically rank pretty high with the boards, but not a lot of people talk about them/apply there because they mostly accept students from Missouri/surrounding states/states they have agreements with. Unless you have 21+ in every section of the DAT and have a 3.5+ GPA, I wouldn't apply there. They typically have only 3 spots at most for OOS students wanting to go there.

When you say OOS, do you also mean the applicants from the surrounding states or are the "3" spots for people from Maine or wherever?

UMKC has an agreement to accept Kansas and Missouri students as In-State students. The 3 out of state students are from states like Hawaii, Alaska, and Montana. Email the school and see. You might be from a state they won't even look at.

But I'm from NY... the most important state...

I would be willing to bet they won't accept someone from New York because there are dental schools in your state. I could be wrong, so call the admissions office and make sure. But I'm from Kansas City, have been down to the dental school around a hundred times and I know they normally only accept OOS students from states without a dental school. Applying is expensive, so call before you apply and you might save yourself some money if they won't even look at you.

They don't accept anyone from IL unfortunately 🙁
