Hi, guys! There's a thread about this over on the veterinary board, and we've gotten some great responses. Curious to know what you have to say. :) If medical school somehow wasn't an option for you, what would your second choice in careers be? There have been answers ranging from chemistry teacher to helicopter pilot to pastry chef, so everything's a go!

paleontology

Sweeeeeet. My friend is majoring in paleontology (goes on summer digs and everything), and the word still always reminds me of "Jurassic Park". Which is really mature, I know. :D

I'd stick with teaching. I'd probably get my PhD and continue on teaching biology at the college level.

lol, that's my favourite movie.

Umm if medical school wasnt then maybe PA school...If medicine wasnt an option then probably marine biology.

Actually medical school is my second career choice....mom said being a gigaloo just wouldnt work.

9th grade math teacher

I actually want to do this when I retire if the opportunity presents itself. 9th grade is really the most crucial year of schooling for anybody. I went back to my high school over winter break and talked with 9th graders about college. I didn't realize the amount of kids already thinking about college at that age was so high. A lot want to go, but there are a lot of things in their way, especially for the minorities/low income students. Siblings who dropped out, little help at home, bad influence from peers, etc. Not to mention these kids are given bad advice, like guidance counselors telling the not to take AP classes, even when they are fit to handle it

I know I'd be able to make a difference in their lives, and I'd be the coolest math teacher ever:D

teacher, actuary, military, historian, not necessarily in that order.

Neat..I actually want to teach when I retire too, if that's a possibility. I want to teach AP Biology though, since my AP bio teacher was pretty bad, and I think he unnecessarily scared a lot of people away from the subject.

either PA or investment banking, but I'd have to go back to college for like 2 more yrs for finance major

I'd like to be a detective, a civil engineer, a teacher, farmer, and/or a researcher.

Realistically, I'd probably do research or engineering because of parental and societal pressures. If it was my choice, I'm not sure what I'd do. Any of the above look good.

I'd be a plus size model

Professional basketball overseas (Couldn't cut it here )

I'm also going to apply to Pathologists Assistant programs I think, just in case.

If not that, then Forensic Science with either my bachelors or go for a Masters to be more competitive.

If medicine/science doesn't work out, I think my next choice would actually be police officer and eventually detective, something I've considered for a long time.

...pornographer...

community college professor

If you search for "Plan B" you'll find a thread like this from a couple months ago. It's like 3 pages long, so you'll find some interesting responses.

Me:

1) Dentist (great hours, decent pay. Why isn't this more competitive hehe)
1) Neuroscience researcher/professor

3) Astrophysicist
4) Engineer (Civil or software/computer, I'm actually thinking about changing my major)
5) Social worker or PO or psychotherapist/psychologist

i'd go into aquaculture and try to figure out how to farm tuna

paleontology

Any girl interested in paleontology is unbelievably hot.

If I don't become a doctor, i'd be an overeducated bum. Most of us are already overqualified for half the jobs that exist out there.

In order
1) Research at a university
2) Pharmacy
3) Give up on life altogether

I-banking like the rest of my friends, sell my soul to the man, make a few pretty pennies then maybe try to get into the MMO-RPG industry and make $30,000/yr loving my job instead of $300,000 hating it :D

Fortunately, medical school is indeed an option. The best of both worlds.

Come on, your name is Legato and you have no musically related choices? I would be a rock star and tour the world.

I would do something else in the health care field. I like being an EMT so far, so maybe paramedic? or nursing?
If health care wasn't an option at all, I have no clue!

Probably move to Austin or San Francisco and sell tie-dye t-shirts. No joke, lol.

Biotech, finance, i-banking

I'd get a Ph.D in Art History, and teach at the University level... I was actually afraid I would have to do this when I thought I bombed the MCAT...

Probably open my own bakery, which may be a goal for retirement

Good job on the MCAT!!! I think I remember reading that you were worried about your results before :)

open my own restaurant... :)

A hooker...;)

No, but really...I'd have to say a fashion designer...or maybe a broadway performer...I've been singing and dancing since as far back as I can remember!

Oh yeah...someone said astrophysicist, so now I remember that I want to be an astronaut as well.

1)Broadway actress
2) Dentist
3) marry a rich guy, and travel the world. :D

in no particular order...

professional dancer

actress

detective / FBI agent

medical technologist

paramedic

working for a fashion magazine or modeling/acting agency

manager

I would like to become a professional beer connoisseur or open up my own brewery.

1)Fighter Pilot (Not too late for ROTC)
2)Astronomer
3)Politics (As an adviser of some sort, I would NEVER run for office)

and my backup plan

IT Professional

Trout fishing guide in Oregon or Montana.

I received an info packet from Emory a couple of weeks ago about a program in anesthesiology (a masters for a career as an anesthesiologist assistant). Surprisingly, as Emory boasts, they make well around 100-170K. Not bad, considering this is an "assistant" position.

But if you ask me, I would go with engineering (computer or else). I'm a career shifter from the industry. The money is great and you don't have to go to a top school to make a six-digit salary.

firefighter, author, high school math/science/English/theater teacher, forensics, or police officer. Multimillionaire lottery winner wouldn't be bad either.

PhD in Biotech
Photographer

and as a dreamer...

F1 driver :D

firefighter/paramedic and get involved with USAR

in order:
concert pianist (if i have talent)
psychologist
astrophysicist
