Second year applicant

I applied to 17 dental schools last year. This year is my second application and it asks which schools I applied to in the previous cycle. I named all 17 schools.

My question is, does it look super terrible that I previously applied to 17 schools and didn't get into any? How may this affect my chances of getting accepted at all? I know it definitely looks bad, but like how bad?

I didn't get in the first year because of a terrible dat score and I submitted my applications super late in the cycle but before the deadline. Should I explain this in the app? What would you do?
