Secondaries-what are they usually all about?

Hey y'all,
I was just wondering whether the secondaries are really seriously weighted into your admissions chances or r they another conscious attempt for schools to make $ from u.
Also, what type of stuff do you see on a secondary? Thanks and everyone kick ass on the MCATs this Sat.

In my opinion, most are money makers. Some places just flat out ask for another check and nothing more. Others have you fill out a form that provides no additional data from that given through AMCAS, but of course a check goes with it. Another group asks for some variation of the question "Why do you want to attend XXX med school?". Many give the option of just living with your personal statement as given on AMCAS or providing a different one if you so desire. Many can be done online. I can't think of anything really unique, but will check my files.

There is a lot of variation in what they ask for, from nothing but a check (Boston) to USC's huge list of mini essays. Pittsburgh had a fairly challenging "ethical dilemma" essay. Lots ask what you've done with your time during any gaps in your education. Most want a small picture of you. Some are conveniently on-line, and others require a typewriter to make them look decent.

some schools with challenging secondaries were hopkins, duke, u chicago. they had some bad ass essays to write or else pain in the butt forms to fill out. basically it's a colonoscopy either way.
