Hey there,

So I'm a sophomore in college now, my major is biochem and mathematics (double major).

Freshman year GPA is pretty pitiful, so I am in the process of raising my GPA (so far I've earned all 4.0's this year, which is boosting it quite well).

Also, my school is on quarters (Ohio State).

So here is my situation... I have two options:

option 1)
-finish undergrad in 4 years total
-apply to med school with about 3.60 gpa
-apply with math major nearly completed, with biochem major not near completed (will finish biochem courses senior year)
-highest science at time of application will be ochem 2 (having the both lecture and labs completed)

option 2)
-finish undergrad in 5 years total
-apply to med school with 3.74
-apply with math major completed, biochem major completed, and either a third major or maybe a master's degree in progress
-highest science will be biochem grad-level courses

Why the heck would you spend an extra year in undergrad if you don't have to? As long as you have a 3.5 and a 30 on the MCAT you are good to go for med school especially since you are a resident of Ohio, a "golden" state for in state preference in med school admissions.

That extra year could kill you (academically). If the only reason you're doing it is for the chance of raising your GPA by .14, I hope you've got a lot of money to burn.

Finish in 4 years. Don't waste time getting yet another major you won't use and playing dice with your grades.

I think you need to express what your motivation is. If you are doing things JUST to get into medical school - I would say DON'T. If you are taking an extra year to study something that you are very interested in, I would say go for it.

Since it sounds like you are thinking of doing this extra work JUST to bump your GPA a bit, I would say it is a waste of time. Apply with that 3.6 that you have, apply smart (use the MSAR choose schools, apply broad) and you will get in somewhere.

Good luck!

Just get it done in 4 years! Staying school too long might wear you out! You can do it!
