An adult cardiothoracic anesthesiology fellowship program that operates in state-of-the-art facilities in the heart of Appalachia has been approved for July of 2020.

We are actively seeking applicants for THIS July (2020) but we’re also reaching out to applicants who would join us in July of 2021 (and would be submitting rank lists very soon on 6/1/2020). We are building a program of two fellows.

Our cardiac division practices in the recently constructed (2017) WVU Heart and Vascular Institute. We have an excellent team of surgeons who provide CABG, valve, OPCAB, ECMO, VAD, and, very recently, heart transplant services to the state of West Virginia and the surrounding area (MD, PA, OH). We have a fast-moving, minimally invasive, robotic caseload that includes mitral valve repair, MIDCAB, and recently AVR. We have a busy cardiology service where experience in EP, TAVR, and MitraClip (amongst other procedures) can be gained.

We are committed to building a fellowship training program that produces competent, thoughtful cardiothoracic anesthesiologists who are TEE competent. Graduates will be well prepared for adult cardiac practice, high-acuity generalist practice, and the advanced PTEeXAM. Our faculty have trained at multiple, reputable institutions throughout the country including Cleveland Clinic, UPMC, Mount Sinai, Wake Forest, and the University of Maryland. We each offer a unique perspective on the provision of intraoperative cardiac anesthesia and TEE services – ideal for a trainee looking to tailor fellowship training to his or her attributes and practice style.

Our group is an amicable, close-knit group of anesthesiologists, residents, nurse anesthetists, and anesthesia technicians. Our team creates a very family-like atmosphere. West Virginia is an excellent place to enjoy new experiences and scenery in our “wild and wonderful” outdoor scene. Morgantown, WV is also an excellent place to enjoy collegiate athletic games and events.

We intend to build this program with a foundation of successful beginning years. This begins with our search for committed applicants. If you are interested in a position, please contact our program director, Dr. Heather Hayanga, by email at [email protected] and thank you for your interest.
