Is it avarice, ego, or hubris that motivates people to lie to themselves and others?

Whether it's scientific misconduct, intentionally misquoting research, the mis-use of statistics (e.g. meta-analysis), defrauding Federal programs, intentional non-disclosure of professional affiliations, or intimidation why is pain medicine comprised of such a "basket of deplorables?"

Which pain medicine expert would you nominate as a true honest broker?

I would first separate out the "pain docs" from the Pain Docs. Once you're talking about real pain specialists who were actually trained in pain medicine, I think you're looking at a similar ratio of "deplorables" in all fields of medicine. And outside of medicine for that matter. Outside of medicine, it's just more acceptable.

I think avarice, ego and hubris all play a role to get people to the point of completely selling out.

There seems to be a disproportionate collection of honorable pain docs on this forum. Seriously.

My observation is that this forum is generally composed of physicians who are interested in learning from one another, improving their skills, expanding their armamentarium and doing their best to help their patients. This is unfortunately a minority in our specialty.

I nominate Suzanne O'Sullivan, Arthur Barskey, and Winifred Rief.
