selling your own fluids

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Has anyone here ever sold plasma? I don't have time to get a job right now and was considering it. Any feedback would be appreciated. 🙂

No, but if you're thinking of selling your uh, man juices, remember that sperm banks can use them to make up to 10 children.

Yes, I am a woman. I have some men friends who are desperate to make $$ at the moment.

One of my roomate's friend does it, and it pays pretty well (anywhere from $20-$40 per time). He's said that some of the people that do it mess up with inserting the needles, much more so than at a blood drive. He said that he's been doing it for 2 months now, and it's just something he does every 2-3 days.

If you need quick cash, it doesn't sound that bad of an idea. The only thing is to make sure that the place is nice and clean before heading over to give your plasma up.

Eggs are in limited supply though, and no female knows if she's prone to infertility or has a lower than normal egg count in her ovaries. Not worth the risk, imo.

Plus it's a much more invasive procedure and you have to take hormone shots for weeks before.

I saw an article about it and saw the 6000 dollars. It is really tempting...it could fund my application cycle next year...

True, but the difference is $6000 for eggs, $60-100 for sperm.

Yeah, def. way more than $6000 assuming you are at all healthy and at all intelligent.

I had a friend (blonde-haired, blue-eyed, 1600 SAT) who donated eggs for $25K. She was a lesbian but I'm not sure if she chose to share that on her app...

Anyway, that wasn't what you were asking about OP. Sorry, I made certain assumptions when you used the word "fluids" :meanie::meanie:

As long as you don't put it down on your application as a job/EC...

I've donated plasma for the last two years. It's pretty straight-forward. You can only go twice in 7 days so you get on a 2-day/week schedule and you have to stick with it. The first time you usually get paid $25 or $30 and the second time is usually $35 or $40. Sometimes they run pay incentives and such and sometimes not but it averages about $70 per week. It takes from 1.5 to 2 hours each time and you can read or listen to music or do whatever while you donate. Forewarning tho, the phlebotomists usually aren't very good so if your veins are hard to stick you might get prodded with a needle a little bit. I'm currently on an 8 week deferral because I had a RBC loss 2 times in two weeks due to the phlebs being incompetent.

I went to the center but my pulse was too high to do it cuz I was nervous. :smack:

Sorry you had a bad experience Herky.

I have worked as a phlebotomist for 2 years at a plasma center, while it is true that sometimes you get a bad phleb, it's not always the case. Much bigger gauge needles are used than when donating blood, not to mention the fact that the blood is taken out multiple times (4-6 depending on your weight, etc) and then the red blood cells are re-inserted through the same needle. This makes the stick quite a bit more difficult and it may need to be adjusted through-out the procedure. This is what makes it harder than simply drawing blood once like at the red cross. Having said this I also donate plasma and I have gotten some pretty big bruises letting newer employees practice on me.

The first time takes a long time because of the basic "physical" and questionnaires that must be filled out. It is safe as long as the center looks clean and you drink a lot of water before and after. The worst I have ever seen happen is the occasional person fainting and maybe once or twice someone throwing up.

The center I work at gives you $30 the first time in a week, $35 the second time. It's good supplementary income, but don't rely on it for your rent in case you get a "deferral" as described above.

Wouldn't it weird you guys out to know that you have offspring out there somewhere, even if you don't know who they are and really have no way of figuring it out? I don't know, I'd never donate (sperm that is), it would just be a little too real for me.

I probably have children out there anyways.

The plasma donating center in my city pays you based on your weight. Do your homework before you decide to try it. In my case I decided it wasn't worth it to me for $20 per visit (though I probably would have done it for $30).

I have a doctor named Dr. Bashir. I'd say that's a good omen for you bashir.

There was once a time when I donated plasma as well. At the joint that I went to, you were allowed to donate a maximum of twice per week. As stated previously, this place also paid a lower amount after the first weekly visit and a higher amount after the second. I believe the two sums in this case were $30 and $40, respectively.

The first time you go in to any of these plasma places is going to be a huge pain in the derriere. I believe it took me about 4-5 hours to go through all of the tests, answer all the health questions, and make my donation. As stated previously, a normal donation (after your initial visit) will take about 1.5 - 2 hours to complete from the time you walk in the door to the time you leave. One of the best things you can do to make your donation go quicker is to be hydrated extremely well.

The center I went to would extract different amounts of plasma based on your body weight. I believe there were 3 weight brackets and due to my super sexy and muscular physique, I was up there in the highest weight bracket. That meant that they took the most plasma from me which equals more time doing the donation.

All in all, it's good money when considering the amount of time it takes. I say go for it. The one downside is that the creases in your arms will start to look like they belong to a heroin user; the diameter of the needle used for plasma donations is extraordinarily large. Have fun!

Not worth it. if you're going to go for quick cash that you cannot put on your resume, I would suggest trying out for some of those "medical studies". Just look it up on craigslist. Some of them pay up to $5k for a week of taking sleep medications or something. And the other alternative is stripping. But again, not everyone can get the job.

That made me lol. These threads remind me just how lucky I am to have my entire tuition taken care of already. God bless the FAFSA.

LOL- I'm sure there's a fetish for pre-med chicks out there....hahahaha

I don't know if I want to be the test subject for some mad scientists' crazy drug ideas.

On an unrelated note, I LOVE your LOLCat- its HIlarious! Where did you get it? DIabeeetuusss lol!

I googled "wilford brimley diabetes cat".

Two weeks ago I ran out of vanilla ice cream and struck my wife...then someone told me my wife has been dead for 6 months. Who the hell did I hit?!

I looked into sperm donation, thats where the real money is at... I looked into it after seeing an add that said "You've been practicing long enough, its time to go pro," and showed some balled up tissues.

Sadly I didn't pass their rigorous screening (lengthy cancer hx on both parents sides), plus-as they put it ever so PC-"We are looking for more diversity." It was said cuz they were paying roughly $150/"donation" and you could "donate" three times per week!!!

So... its totally worth at least looking into if you are a guy, you probably do it anyway, might as well earn some cash-in a not sleezy way.

Wow. That's a lot of cash. 2k a month from donating sperm.

I've been working at a plasma center for a couple years and I believe it's safe as long as you keep yourself hydrated before and after donation. The first time takes a few hours because of all the screenings but after that, it should take anywhere between 45min-1hr45 depending on how hydrated you are. It's fast money and it's easy if you have good veins. If you have bad veins, I'd suggest finding a phlebotomist who can find your vein and stick to that person to prevent any complications. Donors request all the time and we don't get offended. I don't see anything wrong with medical students donating. There is a 4th year medical student who comes and donate at my center. It allows you to put yourself in the patient position. There are many nurses who come to donate as well. Plus, you're saving lives along the way. 🙂 Hope that helps.

A couple things to keep in mind though - you can't donate within a couple of days of having sex or ejaculating, though, and you can't drink alcohol/do any drugs while you're "under contract."
