Semester system or not

Most likely, this semester I will be attending Ponce school of medicine and I was wondering do many schools have a semester system such as ponce or is it just for example year 1, year 2... and which do you think is more beneficial? which is preferred by medical students?

i think most schools are on either the semester or quarter system...

i've never heard of a school that just had the whole year as one chunk...?

Actually, you have been very helpful. I was confused I thought that most medical schools went through the year as a whole.
