Sending a letter of interest before hearing back about secondary?

The more I read about a particular medical school (VCU), the more I've become interested in attending. I applied at the end of August and have yet to hear anything. Is it appropriate to send a letter of interest before you hear whether or not they want to interview you/reject you? Or should I wait until I know whether I'm on hold or not? Thanks.
