so i recently got an award from my undergrad school and i want to let adcoms know about it. is it ok to send an update letter telling them about this one award and my continuing interest in the school or is that just lame?

You can send a letter, but I'd probably opt for an email since your communication will be so short. Most schools will print the email and add it to your file.

I prefer snail mail. I've sent quarterly updates on my activities, since a lot has happened since summer. I think they appreciate signing in blood.

just a general letter of continued interest is a great idea. mentioning the award but not dwelling on it would be fine.

agreed.
send a letter, mention it and mention *ANYTHING* else new and interesting that you've been doing (I've since traveled to X and grasped a better use of X language... or I've begun researching or I've been continuing in my pre-medical studies with X in mind).
congrats on your award, by the way -
👍
