I am a first year student and we are learning how to do breast exams and vaginal exams. One of my concerns is that as a medical student / physician I will see so many breasts and vaginas that I will have less interest in my significant other. I am wondering if it may lead to sexual disfunction of any kind.

For what its worth: I would consider myself to be the very conservative type and have decided to limit sex to marriage. I am not married nor have I ever been married. I also avoid pornography.

I would appreciate it if the comments were limited to appropriate responses.

I doubt this will be a problem. Keep in mind many of those parts will belong to old, diseased people.

Sounds like a pretty boring life to me, breast & vaginal exams will be a good step up for you.

You should also consider changing your name due to you not technically having been in missionary....

Ha. Just wow. Evidence of the healthy mindset imbued by religious fundamentalism.

I used to do ekgs at a hospital, OP. I saw about 20 sets of boobies a day for 2 years, hasn't changed anything. The two contexts are just totally separate, kinda like having different brains. If it doesn't happen naturally at first it will with repetition. As long as you are emotionally involved in one context and intellectually/professionally in the other, it's kind of bizarre to get things mixed up.

For serious, it's like religious people see nakedness as ONLY sexual and it can't be anything else. It's f'ed up.
Maybe you should give porn a shot.

Were you planning on doing family medicine/OBGYN? I ask just because for most specialties breast and vaginal exams are not a day to day experience.

To my knowledge, sexual dysfunction isn't a common problem in doctors performing lots of these exams. I can understand the concern though, albeit from a slightly different perspective (for me, it wasn't so much a matter of becoming sensitized as becoming disgusted). Fortunately, I haven't found it to be a problem.

Sounds like you're more concerned that it will lead to sexual function. :eyebrow:

I'd tend to agree after you get sufficiently desensitized to it. How long that takes is different for everyone, obviously. I know that my libido did, in fact, slump substantially during my OB rotation. I wouldn't say it caused any sort of dysfunction, but I was definitely significantly less interested in sex. Granted, I despised my OB rotation, and it may just have been due to general stress and extreme frustration with the situation than the actual births, exams, etc.

I'm assuming you abstain from masturbating as well. I don't think you have anything to worry about. There probably aren't enough vaginas and breasts in the world to desensitize your poor attention starved penis :(

There actually have been some reports on how fapping to too much porn is causing pre-mature sexual dysfunction/erectile dysfunction.
The report/study basically said you get desensitized to it and seeing a naked chick in real life doesn't excite you anymore, as in you cant even hold an erection.

OP, this wont be an issue for you. If you dont fap and watch porn... you'll most likely have a constant boner anyway.

Also, OP, how to put this nicely... Do the words 'turn your head and cough' mean anything to you?

There does seem to be a fundamental lack of respect for the OP's beliefs. You don't have to have a disease to be able to advise a patient how to treat it. Most of your knowledge comes from what you are taught and from years of patient interaction rather than from personal experience. Granted, personal experience is useful. OP, you should maintain a professional detachment from the situation anyway. Just 'cuz you have to disimpact someone doesn't mean you're gonna stop poopin'. Same reasoning for the other. As a side note, I applaud you for sticking to your beliefs. Don't let the haters get to you, they're just jealous that Tebow has all the hot chicks drooling over him.

So does Mark Sanchez, but I don't see how women who love terrible passers have any relevance here...

My point is that he's not in any way trying to foist his beliefs on anyone else here. I personally do not like folks telling me how I should live my life or structure my spirituality. I doubt any of you do either.

You should probably stop posting contrary to the public belief. And believe in Jesus, for he is your lord and savior. Oh, and make sure you get up at 6am to have breakfast before walking the dog so you can make it to school/work on time by 730am and take your smoke break at 11am and again at 1pm, just after lunch finishes as 1230... phew, this is hard.

"ass and titties, and big bootied bitches" will have a whole new meaning for you (VOM!). You will become calloused, for sure. But calloused to the saggy, candida invested, foul smelling, GI bled on parts, that there wont be a correlate for anyone you'd actually look at, let alone touch. The number of attractive women that enter your practice or training (especially training) will be about, well, 0/1,000,000... and then only MAYBE if you are an Ob/Gyn.

Just remember, its only as awkward as you make it.

EAR MUFFS FOR WEAK OF HEART OR FAINT OF STOMACH

And dude, if you've never been blown or banged a chick, I PROMISE you, when you get married, you won't tire of that for quite some time Ala "40 year old virgin" ending.... though she might, since you wont know what you're doing, but that's another story...

Honestly, I don't understand this question. Are you seriously asking if doctors who give exams all suffer from sexual dysfunction?

OP - the answer is almost certainly no. The fact that you actually had to ask the question leaves open the door that you may dwell upon sex to the point that it makes you neurotic enough to experience sexual dysfunction anyway.

You'd be surprised how many religious 20 something year olds there are whose only sexual experience has been wet dreams...

You'd also NOT be surprised how many sicko's there are out there who start out with softcore porn and escalate until they've migrated to child porn. (When in doubt, check out your neighborhood at crimereports.com and see just how many sexual predators live right down the road from you).

Say what you will about the religious 20 somethings, but at least they're typically not the ones out there raping kids. (crazy polygamists not included)

lol is that why priests were raping little boys? (i mean they're being both homosexual AND rapists) Or is that why the sole inner motivation in suicide bombers is the 72 virgins in heaven? (yes killing yourself for sex, really)

But anyway what you described (the "masturbation progression") is true. You start off with x porn and it stops arousing you so you progress to y porn then to z porn, getting "wilder" everytime. The only problem is that those into child porn and potential child rapists dont develop this (even a couple porn fanatics I know go wtf at anything to do with children) and generally have mental issues of some form. Porn does not cause it.

Oh so because one (or four, or 10) MD's were quacks, all MD's are quacks eh?

Next you'll be telling me that the divorce rate is lower in non-religious folks...

...and I'm sure your porn freak friends would admit to you that they enjoyed child porn, if indeed they do.

Feel free to post a study demonstrating this. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

There are several reasons to abstain from sex.

1. Emotional consequences

2. Physical consequences: pregnancy, getting an abortion (ethically borderline, at best), perhaps keeping the baby and having to raise it, and the big problem... STDs and STIs. They're everywhere. Honestly, without the HPV vaccine, I wouldn't feel comfortable just kissing anyone, period.

I should also point out that it is not my contention that everyone who views pornography will escalate to child pornography. My contention is that it starts somewhere, and the OP's choice to avoid pornography is commendable and he should not be ridiculed for these beliefs.

Ahahahaha... what?

You think the causal link is porn ---> pedo?

Does porn --> homo too in your mind?

Sexual preferences are preexisting biological imperatives and have nothing to do with the consumption of porn or how many women you have sexy time with.

Also, OP, you should read "Jesus Interrupted" and then get a girlfriend.

Why's it have to start with soft porn? A glimpse of a bikini, nay, an ankle can put Beaver Cleaver on the slippery slope to Jeffrey Dahmer.

Oh, but not always, so don't twist my words into something ridiculous...

Um... birds? Bees? Does every other animal species procreate out of sinful lust?

And then what about the same-sex pairing/copulation observed in numerous species - or do you deny that too?

I wouldn't actually...the world is full of hypocrites. Again, I simply think that making the OP the butt of all the assorted jokes because of his beliefs is in poor taste.

Idk about sexual dysfunction but I'm sure not looking forward to that part of medical education. Hopefully the patient I learn on will be ugly and gross, otherwise it might be really awkward.

if your avatar is any indication of your future get ready for a bunch of medicare vag come your 3rd year. Medicare vag is not good vag.

You know what, I'm sure you must be right. When my kid craps on the couch, I won't bother to teach him to crap in the toilet....it must be a biological imperative because my dog does it too.

Oh yeah, and Buddy and Pedro, the "gay" penguins at the Toronto zoo (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/technol...ay-penguins-attracted-to-new-female-partners/) must have been "biologically confused" when they moved on to new, female partners. OOOOH, there must be a separate gene for bisexual penguins!

I'm sure Buddy's just a repressed transgender penguin who would tell you so.....if he could talk

Also, storytime: Ed Gein, the original 40-year-old virgin!

[Ed] Gein was born in La Crosse, Wisconsin. His parents, George Philip Gein (1873–1940) and Augusta Wilhelmine (Lehrke) Gein (1878–1945), both natives of Wisconsin, had two sons: Henry George Gein (1901–1944), and his younger brother, Edward Theodore Gein. Augusta despised her husband, but the marriage persisted because of the family's religious belief against divorce. Augusta Gein operated a small grocery store and eventually purchased a farm on the outskirts of the small town of Plainfield, Wisconsin, which then became the Gein family's permanent home.[4]

Augusta Gein moved to this location to prevent outsiders from influencing her sons.[4] Edward Gein left the premises only to go to school. Besides school, he spent most of his time doing chores on the farm. Augusta Gein, a fervent Lutheran, preached to her boys the innate immorality of the world, the evil of drinking, and the belief that all women (herself excluded) were prostitutes and instruments of the devil. She reserved time every afternoon to read to them from the Bible, usually selecting graphic verses from the Old Testament dealing with death, murder, and divine retribution.[5]

On November 16, 1957, Plainfield hardware store owner Bernice Worden disappeared and police had reason to suspect Gein. Worden's son had told investigators that Gein had been in the store the evening before the disappearance, saying he would return the following morning for a gallon of anti-freeze. A sales slip for a gallon of anti-freeze was the last receipt written by Worden on the morning she disappeared.[12] Upon searching Gein's property, investigators discovered Worden's decapitated body in a shed, hung upside down by ropes at her wrists, with a crossbar at her ankles. The torso was "dressed out" like that of a deer.[13] She had been shot with a .22-caliber rifle, and the mutilations were made after death.[citation needed]

Searching the house, authorities found:[14]

Four noses
Whole human bones and fragments[15]
Nine masks of human skin[16]
Bowls made from human skulls
Ten female heads with the tops sawn off
Human skin covering several chair seats
Mary Hogan's head in a paper bag[17]
Bernice Worden's head in a burlap sack[18]
Nine vulvae in a shoe box[19]
A belt made from female human nipples[20]
Skulls on his bedposts
A pair of lips on a draw string for a window-shade
A lampshade made from the skin from a human face

Shortly after his mother's death, Gein had decided he wanted a sex change and began to create a "woman suit" so he could pretend to be a female.[14] Gein's practice of donning the tanned skins of women was described as an "insane transvestite ritual".[27] Gein denied having sex with the bodies he exhumed, explaining: "They smelled too bad."

I didn't say I approved of the behavior because it has biological roots. All human behavior is contingent in the physical nature of the brain. That doesn't mean I approve of the entire spectrum of human behavior.

My point was pedophiles don't become pedophiles because they see an adult female naked.

To add to my book suggestions, Free Will by Sam Harris is another book relevant to this discussion.

umm...that is what a causal link is...

and I honestly don't get how a media form that glorifies womanly sexual attributes would in anyway make someone want something the exact opposite. It's like saying commercials for cars makes people buy barbie dolls... pre- and post-pubescent women look nothing alike...

I agree completely. Nor do they become pedophiles because they are biologically driven to be.
