I have two beautiful children who I try to protect to the best of my ability and this is an area of concern for me. We've got quite a few child molesters in my neighborhood. I also don't want one of my kids turning into a molester down the road. I am by no means a "Beaver Cleaver", nor do I expect my children to be. I think this is a legimate question. Males naturally think about sex many times throughout the day, and to subject oneself to the field that is medicine could naturally make one worry. It's over exposure to many "private parts", many diseased "privates". And I believe the worry presents itself as: "Will I be able to have a "normal" sex life despite the images that now pervade my brain?"

OP, if you feel that you need to talk to someone about this, you should look to campus therapeutic services, or a mental health professional trained to address issues such as this. It is natural to be curious about this question regardless of one's religious beliefs.

What should be emphasized is that when you are working with patients you remain professional. Leave the sex for the bedroom.. or the kitchen.. or the club.. or whatever one prefers.

There are several reasons to abstain from sex.

1. Emotional consequences

2. Physical consequences: pregnancy, getting an abortion (ethically borderline, at best), perhaps keeping the baby and having to raise it, and the big problem... STDs and STIs. They're everywhere. Honestly, without the HPV vaccine, I wouldn't feel comfortable just kissing anyone, period.

STDs everywhere? Not a good excuse to be a virgin brah. Wearing a condom (again) does an excellent job protecting you. If you're so worried about life risks, you should avoid driving cars as well since that presents a greater health-risk than having protected sex.

HPV? You cant get it from kissing... it's a very very minor theoritical risk and is mainly associated with one strand (HPV-16). But your actual odds of getting it from kissing someone who has it approaches very close to 0. Oh and most HPV strands are 100% harmless. If they werent, most of the human population in north american would be walking around with cervical cancer,penis cancer and oral cancer.

I am a first year student and we are learning how to do breast exams and vaginal exams. One of my concerns is that as a medical student / physician I will see so many breasts and vaginas that I will have less interest in my significant other. I am wondering if it may lead to sexual disfunction of any kind.

For what its worth: I would consider myself to be the very conservative type and have decided to limit sex to marriage. I am not married nor have I ever been married. I also avoid pornography.

Your fear/worry is understandable given your decision to wait until you are married for sexual intimacy. In my experience, when you do these exams in a professional manner, there isn't any sexual association whatsoever. If you have a sexual association with these exams and procedures, then that is an entirely separate issue.

Be a professional and it shouldn't be a problem. The last thing in my mind when I am with my wife (both intimately and non-intimately) is patient procedures and exams. Just sayin'...
