Just wondering how folks are doing with housing for UCSF.... :)

Members don't see this ad.

really bad ...Couldn't even get those folks to return a phone call so far ..

are you talking about the landlords?

are you in the bay area?

Ya , the land lords ,
No Iam not from the bay area....Iam from Canada

what kind of a place are you looking for? i'm going to take walking tours over the weekend at neighborhoods nearby the school. i'll look out for places that are good fits for you.

Stanford Fencer,
Thanks a lot. That's so sweet of you . Iam actually looking for a studio close to UCSF...
What are you looking for ?

hey stan,
so it's ucsf for sure? when do you have to decide by (for the two uc's?). Let me have your spot at ucla since someone else stole yours at penn from me :(
star

i think that i'm looking for something similar. i heard that there's one nearby UCSF going for 1150.. so i suspect that that's the rough estimate of the rent market here now. i'll keep you updated then. there's still a good bit of time left.

stargirl -- i am still not 100% decided....

hey stan and cinnamon,

keep me updated on your apartment hunting. i too am looking for either a one-bedroom or studio, preferably in inner sunset. i've been actively checking the craigslist (.org) and will eventually sign up for renttech. i found a very good map from sfguide.com, detailing the different neighborhoods and even includes the major cross-section streets.

another site that you may want to look into is the ucsf incoming and current medical students site:
missinglink.ucsf.edu (click on forum)
there is some information on on- and off-campus housing.

good luck an keep me posted.

hey, one more question, what are your plans for the summer? i will be terminating my fellowship at the NIH end of June, and was looking for some volunteer or study abroad programs. but between moving coast to coast and finding an apartment in sf, don't know if it's possible.

reena

Hi guys,
Here's another link abt SF, gives you an over all picture on what to expect .
If you guys are interested here it is..

<a href="http://www.dopejam.com/byecanada/index.cfm" target="_blank">http://www.dopejam.com/byecanada/index.cfm</a>

Reena,
Plans for summer..hmmm
I'll be moving to SF in June...(that's my plan :D ). When are you guys planning to move ?

cinnamon,

i am planning to move late july-early august.

reena

I am looking to spend a month studying biochem, hiking, hanging out as a "naturalist," and kicking back with some greek wine in one of the many Aegean islands such as skopelos.

<a href="http://users.otenet.gr/~skopelos/photos/index.htm" target="_blank">http://users.otenet.gr/~skopelos/photos/index.htm</a>

I'd strongly urge any other fellow UCSFers to come with me :D

All-

About two weeks ago I was up in SF and looked for an apartment around UCSF. There weren't too many apartments available near UCSF right now. I talked with Carmen about this matter and she told me that there will be a lot more apartments available over the summer. So don't panic....it is still too early to look for an apartment, especially if you are planning to move in around July/August. See you guys in August!

Bruin2K

how very interesting, stan!! i too was leaning towards greece. which month will you be travelling?

reena

Hi Reena,

Well, I think the trend that I'm noticing is that travel expenses in Greece becomes a lot higher starting from the end of June. Hence, I may consider going from early or mid June to the end of June. Greece is a great place. Any reason why in particular that you're considering it? Hmm... if I meet up with you in Greece that'd be great, because then I'd have a study partner for Biochem (j/k)

hey guys... I too, will be moving in late July/ early August. I think I'll start looking in late May/ early June when I get back from school. Do you think that's enough time? I hope Carmen's right about more apts. becoming available over the summer! Craig's list seems to be a very good resource... if you want to find a roomate, you can go to UCSF's housing site, but most of the people looking for roomates are already students at UCSF. Hope to see you guys in August!

stan,

no particular reason why i chose greece... just a place i'd always wanted to visit!

yes, airfare soars as summer nears for most foreign destinations. but unfortuantely, my hands are tied and i can't take off till the end of june. :(
it would have been great if we could meet up in greece!

reena

hi reena, are you going with your family or buddies from college?

if you are going to make it all the way to greece, i suggest that you give a few places in turkey some thought as well (istanbul, the mediterranean coast)....

i'll keep you updated on my travel plans.

Why would any self respecting SF landlord return a call when prospective renters are willing to walk all over each other to get in line for a shot at one of those scarce, meager, and over priced vacancies?

stan,

i find it amazingly odd that you have mentioned the two countries i was considering most to visit. for the time being, i will be a lone traveller as i was mostly considering volunteer abroad programs.

do keep me posted on your travels!

reena

reena --

i love the mediterranean coast... grew up reading about the greeks and romans, and actually ended up living in istanbul for 5 years (gorgeous city worth a visit too, by the way... former constantinople, byzantium... so much history!) i also used to spend summers down at the turkish mediterranean coast, in towns like antalya, bodrum... anyway i'm a bit of a local for that part of the world. lots i can share with you about those places (esp. the food...). i honestly hope that you will end up visiting this summer.

very very cool, stan! i will know in the upcoming weeks what my plans are. hopefully, i won't be a disappointment.

sorry, just wanted to fit into your crowd... (looking up at all the UCSFans in awe).... :p

Hey,

I was just curious to know how many of you UCSFers are still holding a spot at UCLA or are undecided between the two? And has UCSF made their final decisions yet or is there another batch of acceptances coming soon.

I'm on the alternate at UCLA and wanted to get an idea of how its gonna work out at the end.

Thanks

stan,

did you end up taking those walking tours of SF neighborhoods?

this was the intended thread before we turned it into our summer travel plans. btw, i sent out an application today for a volunteer project based in istanbul. hopefully, i'll get placed!

Reena -- I did take a brief tour.. came down with a cold so didn't stay around for too long. There are definitely a good number of "for rent" signs up. There's even a studio apartment available across the street from the school!

Can you tell me what this volunteer organization is? (website?)

stan,

sorry to hear that you were feeling ill; i do hope you are feeling better.

as for the volunteer project, it is through council exchanges (councilexchanges.org). i am praying that i'll get placed! i have acquired all these books on turkey, and one in particular on turkish food. can't wait to have baklava for breakfast, lunch and dinner!

Good to know that there are actually apts available.Did you find anything that's available for June or is this all for later for july/aug ?

reena --

baklava (ok, real baklava in turkey) is incredibly sweet... probably not good for your teeth. but what the heck :)

my recommendations for you when you are out there:

1 - iskender kebap
2 - adana kebap

these are must-haves!

try Efes Pilsen for Turkish beer :D

cinnamon -- since i was a little sick i just drove around and walked around very little. nevertheless, i think that some of these "for rent" signs have been up for a while, and are probably available for immediate rental.

i promise you all MUCH BETTER updates on housing this weekend.

doesn't ucsf have student housing? i recall being there over a yr ago and the students said there are........

stargirl,
There is student housing for incoming students-- Turk Blvd. Apts... but it's by lottery who gets housing and also you have to share a room with someone... but it is pretty cheap compared to non-ucsf apartment prices...

hazel

oh yeah btw, i was rejected by ucsf yesterday :) :D  <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />

oh and michigan the day before that.... :)

Reena -- I sincerely hope you get it too! Let me know once you figure out where you'll be staying. I can give you some pointers on the neighborhoods (I mean, some bars have to be around after 10 years, no?) :D

I'm trying to get myself to Istanbul this summer as well. I went to school there, so I'm seeing if teachers there can hook me up.

If I meet up with you at Istanbul, I'll treat you dinner at my favorite restaurant next to the Rumelihisar Castle by the Bosphorus.

awww, that is so sweet stan! <img border="0" alt="[Lovey]" title="" src="graemlins/lovey.gif" />
you can enjoy your kebabs and i can melt into my baklava! :D

i will definitely keep you posted of my plans. oh, btw, i'd ended up with volunteer for peace (vfp.org), instead of council exchanges. maybe you want to look into it?

stan,

in the shortest turnaround time, i got placed for the volunteer project at bogazici universitesi!

it will certainly be me and turkey for the entire month of july. if by chance, you should be in istanbul the latter half of the month, we should definitely meet up. i have ten days or so to venture through turkey. any suggestions for itineraries?

do you also have any insights on reliable tour operators in turkey? my brother is a tad concern with my travelling alone.

bogazici university is the premier university in turkey. it's located right next to where i went to elementary school. it feels very much like an american university, given its strong ties to US institutions. i'm happy that you are based there, and you will be very safe. now, turkish men are very intrigued by foreign women (and i don't know what ethnicity you are), but you should also expect lots of attention.

end of july? very distinct possibility. i'll try to get myself out there. i'll get back to you on the tour business. i should double check with my turkish buddies about tour companies, as my information for sure is out-of-date. if i'm going to be out there, you may also consider just doing a road trip with me. i've made the road trips before, so it'd be fun. i'm a good guide.

check out this webpage, and follow the link to istanbul. tell me what you think :)

It still strikes me as kind of odd that a taiwanese-by-origin person (myself) is giving you an insider's guide to one of the most exotic places on Earth. You know, when I was living in Istanbul I was one of maybe at most 50 Taiwanese peoplein Turkey

Stanford and Reena,
I thought this was a message board about San Francisco Housing, not about your summer trips...

bruin2k,

many apologies to you and others for my digression off the initial intention of this thread. we will gladly discuss our travel plans elsewhere.

stan,
i sent you a PM.

Hey guys, carmen just called me today and I got accepted to UCSF ! that's all... so I guess I should be looking for housing too =) I'll be living near SF during the summer so yeah =)

hazel

hazelmei

hey wasabi... i applied for student housing, but i doubt i'm gonna get it... if i don't, i'll have to look for housing also. i, too, want to live within walking distance from the campus... when are you starting to look?

stargirl, i hope you get into ucla... i gave up my seat there about a month ago, and it seems like hazel, stan, and wasabi will too. good luck!
