So I shadowed a specialty surgeon at an academic hospital yesterday for 12 hours.
He did two surgeries, one in the AM, the other in the afternoon. Throughout the afternoon surgery, I can honestly say that I was bored watching it. I wasn't disgusted at all seeing the internals of an operated patient.
He then let me round with him and a couple of residents. That part of it was most excellent. We looked at some arteriograms and angiograms to analyze and discuss future patients to be operated on. We then went and saw 16 patients in sequence. That part of it was good too.
Mixed bag. But I was thinking that since I was bored watching the surgeries, I'm probably not cut out to do surgery in general. If I got bored actually doing the surgery, that would be terrible. And the mind can wander when we work.
