Greetings fellow travelers,

I have an anesthesiologist willing to let me shadow them (a friend of a friend), but his office has asked me to provide a "letter of intent". I have no gorram idea what that would look like, and google hasn't been of much help (in the context of shadowing, anyhow).

Has anyone else come across this? I've shadowed three physicians so far, and none of them has asked for anything beyond "fill out X and Y paperwork".

Ask the office. Tell them you are unaware of what type of LoI they are looking for as you have never been asked for one before, so could they please expand. :luck:

Write why you want to shadow and what you hope to gain from the experience. Also express at least some interest in anesthesia.

They probably need something official since anesthesiologists don't have an office to see patients. They are entities of the hospital and OR. Likely need the letter to have on file at the hospital to cover HIPPA regulations. You may need to take the hospital HIPPA course in order to be allowed in since you will be seeing patients without their knowledge in the OR suite.

I'm about to do an anesthesiology shadow but I only had to sign a form for the hospital (I'm shadowing an old employer). I think it might just be for the doctor since they don't know you personally so that they get to know you/your goal? Maybe it's just something their hospital requires. Anyway, write about what the person above suggested, your goal/what you hope to get out of the experience, and how much you are interested in anes.
