I was having the hardest time finding a dentist to shadow - the hard part I think, was because the practices that I had called and/or showed up at were always crazy busy. Going down the list of dentists in the phonebook yielded no results either. I didn't really have connections with any dentist in my state. I felt like I had hit a dead end.
I was feeling quite frustrated, but it's spring break this week, so I decided to give it another shot.
On Monday, I just walked into a clinic - it was near closing time - and I got to ask the dentist directly. He was cool with it. (It was to be a first shadowing experience for both of us).
The next day, I shadowed the dentist all day - it was his short day, his practice closed at noon.
And at the end of my shadowing session, I ended up with a job! To be his official shadower / receptionist/ all-round assistant.
How cool is that?
It's the kind of office where he sees one patient at a time, so it never gets too busy, and I'm sure I'll learn a lot, and see at the same time how a practice is run. And there will be plenty of downtime where I'll get to study and do homework too. And I get paid. And he'll know me well enough to write me a nice letter of recommendation. YAY!!!
So the moral of the story is: Don't be frustrated and don't give up.
And it works much better if you get to talk to the dentist directly. Near closing time worked for me.
Good luck everybody! YAY!
