Hello SDNers! I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I am going to be working this summer about half an hour north of Philly on a standard 9 to 5 job and was also really interested in doing shadowing or medical volunteering in the area. Because of my work schedule I can only volunteer on weekends and nights. I am not familiar with they area so I was wondering if you guys have any ideas for contacts? I do have a car so anything in the vicinity is good. Thank you!

What kind of volunteering are you interested in?

The city's health clinics are generally very receptive to having people come in and shadow or volunteer.

(There are always opportunities for people who speak a foreign language to help translate in the city's health clinics. Speaking Chinese or Spanish would open up a lot of doors.)

The big university hospitals generally don't have students shadow much - they have so many med students that it's hard to have shadowing students in that mix. Any of the health clinics in North Philadelphia or Center City (Mazzoni Clinic, Philadelphia Fight) would be a good bet.

If you can let me know what you're interested in, I might be able to give you more specific info. 🙂

Thanks for the quick reply! I did a little bit of shadowing and volunteering at an emergency department at a children's hospital and had a wonderful experience. It would be great to do something in emergency medicine but am definitely not against getting some new experiences in surgery (I've never seen one) or family practice. I would, however, definitely like to do something involving some interaction with patients. I speak Russian which might help me find something and will probably get in touch with some of those clinics that you mentioned. If you have any more specific info that would be great. Thanks again!

Not sure how far north of the city you are, but there is a great Pre-Med volunteer program at St Mary Medical Center in Langhorne (Bucks county, northeast from the city...about 45 min, with moderate traffic...easy access from highways). The program is centered around shadowing. You have regularly scheduled hours in the ER and OR; once a week on Monday nights you have a 'lecture' with a doc from a different specialty, where you have the opportunity to ask any questions, and generally hear about his/her work and anything you'd like to know about medicine, school, etc. Then you can set up time shadowing any of those docs in the ancillary departments if you're interested. The program is SO flexible. I think you'd defintiely be able to do it with a 9-5 job, although you might find yourself very busy depending on when you do your ER shifts ( you can do them on the weekends though). There's a minimum number of hours, but it wasn't difficult to meet at all. I think I ended up with almost double the requirement. Still, it's a great opportunity that doesnt get much publicity (which I think might be a good thing)...it's basically a summer of "see whatever you'd like in the hospital." If you're interested I'll send you the contact info for the program.

That sounds like a great opportunity. I wish there were more things like that in city. I was also going to suggest applying to be a volunteer for a doc at one of the major city hospitals like HUP, CHOP, Jeff...etc but sometimes the applications can take weeks to process and you would have to find a good mentor who would be able to give you a diverse experience. Sometimes, volunteers at some of the bigger hospitals quit because there isn't enough to do. But many still think they get to see a lot of interesting things. And it tends to be very flexible with you working 9-5.

But I think pennylane's opp sounds much better - might be worth checking it out.

This sounds great! I would love any contact info that you have. Thanks.

Hello! I am also a pre-med student in the Philadelphia Area. This summer I am participating in UPenn's Pre-Med Volunteer Program. I'm not sure if it is too late to apply but here is the link it sounds like a great program:

Do not get discouraged by Phase I. Do not get discouraged by the sometime "shortness" of the volunteer coordinator. She is very helpful, but very busy. Phase II is when the fun starts.

Thanks for the tips good to hear from someone who did the program!

Do you know if Phase I and Phase II of the HUP Pre-med program need to be done right after the other? I live outside of Philly but I go to school in Boston; therefore, I can only do the 12-week session in the summer and then the 13-week session the summer after that. Any information would help. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads up.

Anyone starting Phase I this summer? I'm attending the orientation event on April 21st.

I will be attending orientation the 21st as well 🙂 Yay!

And in response to jaja's question I would email Valerie Fischer she is in charge of the program and ask her: <[email protected]>.
