shadowing....
right so how did u guys set it up?
did u just go to the hospital and ask some random doc if u could follow him/her around? or do the volunteer coordinators usually hook u up with somebody to follow around?

I asked my doctor if he knew anyone who would be willing to let me shadow them, and he said "Sure do...me!" So I shadowed my doctor once a week for about 5 months. I was lucky b/c my doc is a preceptor for M-1 students at UNC and Duke, so he just did the same program with me that he does with them (sidenote: I work as an EMT and I do clinical research, so I was already used to seeing patients, just not in this setting). I was really lucky the way all of that fell together for me. So I would just ask a doctor that you know if they know of anyone who would be willing to have you shadow them...most docs I've asked about this are really open to having people shadow them or could put you in touch with someone.
