What do you plan (or hope) to buy before starting medical school? I personally plan to buy everything new.

Here is my list..

Backpack (North Face or Columbia Sports)
Plasma TV
DVR
Bike
Furniture
Cooking Utensils
Town House (may be..to get in-state fees starting second year).

What do you plan to buy? What brand/type do you recommend for my list?

I'm guessing by your list $$$ is not an issue...

My TVs are all 8 years old. My furniture is 6 years old. My cars are 8 and 10 years old. I'm hoping to sell my current house, perhaps buy a new house, get a new laptop (mine is 4 years old). A backpack would be nice, but I can probably get away with my old one (the holes aren't that big). I can't afford to buy anything else that isn't specifically required for school.

I'm a third year, and I love my Tivo. There are a few shows that I love, and I rarely can watch them when they air, nor do I want to sit through commercials. I went with Tivo because it seemed like the simplist type, and I got a great deal on a DVD-Tivo combo. Check bensbargains.net - they frequently have them listed.

A good backpack is very useful. I love my North Face pack that I got a little before med school. Definitely a good investment. Yes, you do need a hip strap in medical school! I would stick with companies that make serious backpacks.

Bike - useful around some campuses (I sometimes rode my bike to school for the first two years), and great if it's your source of exercise.

I listed DVR cause of the same logic you mentioned above. Many times, I waste time waiting for the right show with DVR (or TIVO), I can watch my show and get done with my "TV HOUR" in an hour.

I just bought NorthFAce RECON - it seems a little small. WHICH NORTHFACE DO YOU HAVE? IS IT BIG ENOUGH?

Here is my list (if I get in) and once I get there:
pencils (maybe I'll invest in a refillable one, since I go though a ton of disposables)
pens (I like Bic or papermate)
a new alarm clock (mine is unreliable)
a library card at X medical school / ID card
books for my classes
a planner
lots of notebooks and paper and index cards
food for the refrigerator (we all need to eat)
cleaning supplies
a small, hopefully cheap studio apartment or campus housing

Ha ha .. .just my input. . don't forget the necessities 🙂

What the hell a plasma TV is on your list of things to get for med school?!

I recommend a cool computer monitor instead =)

Tivo/DVR is awesome. My roommates and I rent it from our cable company, and we watch our favorite shows (Namely Simpsons, Scrubs, and Rachel Ray's 30 minute meals) when we have time. Cable is a nice extra if you're in med school, at least for us.

If I were shopping for med school, I'd throw in wireless cards/adapters/router. Athough not absolutely necessary, its nice. I live with three other people, so its REALLY nice to not have cords running through the house.

If you don't have a computer yet, I'd hold off until you get to med school. Sometimes schools are very specific about specifications. My school just made it mandatory to have a PC laptop for the first two years. I would have been pissed had this affected me, cuz I'm an apple person myself. They made it impossible to have an apple, as special authentification software is needed to get onto my school's network as well as to sign in/turn in assignments, and its only written for windows. Another reason why waiting to buy a computer is a good idea is that many schools have special contracts with vendors (mine has a relationship with IBM/Lenovo), and we get special discounts...although I found out if you just call them up and tell them you are a student anywhere, and they usually give you the special discount any way (my bro in law did this). This goes the same for PDA's if your school requires them. Hold off until you know for sure.

I use a Northface Talisman. The key is that it's not so big that I can fill it to the point of risking by back/shoulders/ankles. But 98% of the time it's not too big, and even on days when I just throw a few things in I can cinch it down to make it smaller.

For me a TV hour is more like 50 minutes. Kindof like an hour of therapy lasting 50 minutes 🙂

I went through a lot of highlighters. By the time I figured out that I was going through so many, I bought a huge econopack which was mid-MS2 year. And now I've got half of those still in my desk. I've never used a highlighter on the wards, though I've seen a few people who do.

I have an cobalt blue Oakley Icon backpack right now & it rules. It is a couple of years old and I hope to get a new one. If you watch they go on sale every so often. 🙂

I know what you mean, man. My parents are saying the same...But I have the nicest laptop (at least I think). Dell Inspiron 700m. One of the smallest laptops. I love it.

I already have everything needed for wireless internet. I AGREE - no one (at least not me) can live without wireless.

All I really need for myself a nice, comfy full-sized bed so I can invite girls over and have "fun." 😀

Riiiiiiiiight

Tablet PC (probably IBM/Lenovo), Dell 24" or 30" display (but this is probably not going to happen if I want to ever study... 😛), littmann cardio 3 stethoscope, scrubs/labcoat/surgical clogs, ... a ton of shirts/ties/pants.

definitely a tivo. probably an ipod too (i still don't have one!!!!!). espresso machine.

i have a north face slingshot, and it's a bit too small. i love everything else about it, though--the fit, quality, color, etc.

List of (I) must haves:

Very small lightweight laptop (IBM)

Pentel Sharp mechanical pencils:

New car maybe (mine is a 1992 honda accord 219000 miles) I really like the new 3-series BMW(xi AWD) and not EXTREMELY expensive ~30k (plus they give 50,000 mile services at the dealer included, very nice plus):
http://www.bmwusa.com/vehicles/3/325xisedan/default

Need to replace my old POS kawasaki ninja, I am really looking at this. 2006 yamaha YZF-R6 If any riders are outthere, this is arguably the most advanced 600 in production:

-But it probably won't happen unless I get some serious $$$ TAing and tutoring this summer 🙁

and the usual, books, ect.

Woohoo - I will be attending a MD school in US next year (got my first acceptance)!!! Thanks to Many People!!!

It has been a long journey....many sleepless nights, notable hair loss, significant social and financial sacrifices...IT WAS ALL WORTH IT!!!
Significant financial sacrifices eh? Had to downgrade to the townhouse from the McMansion? My heart goes out to you. +pity+ :barf: 👎

Just how do you plan to afford this BMW when you're in med school? Are your parents rich?

Where the hell are the golf clubs? 😱 Screw the cooking utinsels. No money for food, just golf. :horns:

Student loans. A lot of my medschool friends bought new cars when they started med school. In the midwest, you have to drive everywhere and it is important to have a pretty good car. The schools out here will give you money for stuff like that. I've put up with my POS for a while and have had to do most matinence on it myself.

What are you, his parents? Jeeze.... A guy can dream...

Student loans.

I actually remember people getting scholarships during undergrad to pay for tuition, but still went ahead and took out student loans to buy new cars - smart move.

Yes it is smart. You don't need to pay them back untill you are out of medschool (0% APR). If you do the math its better than buying, say, a honda civic and paying through their creditors. Oh and its not like I wanted to add on a Dinan supercharger, suspension, wheel & tire, and break package 🙂
Just the base model.

You know I can't wait till the day I make a lot of money so I can just drop into a dealership and buy a full-loaded infiniti g35 coupe with CASH on the spot and drive away haha.

Don't waste your time on the Plasma tv and DVR. Probably won't have much spare time to watch it, nonetheless rack up the debt... unless you're paying for cash, which if that's the case, please put one on lay-a-way for me.

Furniture? Anything IKEA. It's fun. And they have swedish meatballs at the store.

Backpack- anything that can carry media, drinks, change for parking, your phone. I just got a rad Adidas one for Christmas.

My list:

Channel Islands surfboard- 6'2"
Wine
Another acoustic guitar (Martin... I'm thinking D series... I LOVE to play)

Honda is really nice, but I think its overpriced. I used to be a suzuki man myself but it seems like they are ignoring the 600 class more and more every year. This is what is improved on the yamaha this year and is the most advanced 600, and that it redlines at 17,500 RPM :meanie::
Taken from their website:

"The YZF-R6 is the first production motorcycle with a fly-by-wire throttle system—for flawless response under all conditions."
-YCCT—Yamaha Chip Controlled Throttle-sweet innovation taken from the MotoGP bike. Very cool almost as cool at honda's digital steering dampner.

"Straight frame concept: developed from the Yamaha M1 GP machine, the YZF-R6’s steering head, swingarm pivot and rear axle all lie in a straight line—for unsurpassed handling—with an all-new inline four-cylinder engine designed for optimal layout and mass centralization."
-Bleh suzuki did this last year on their 1000, but nice that yamaha added it to the 600

"Slipper-type back torque-limiting clutch greatly facilitates braking/downshifting from high speed."
-Only the kawasakis zx6r has this I believe

"Formula 1-style air management presents very small frontal area and excellent aerodynamics; new ram-air induction ducts cool, high-pressure air through the steering head for optimal combustion, more horsepower and enhanced engine cooling."
-Whatever I think that all bikes have this but they integrated it with their YYCT which makes it special

This did this all to their 600 and kept it at ~9,000. Pretty sweet deal. And they also increased the bore in the motor for more power!!

TiVo
iPod
Bose sounddock
Down comforter
coffee maker

and eddie - you only pay 0% APR if it's on the 8500 in Subsidized Stafford that you are allowed a year. Otherwise it's WAY higher than that.

i got a sweet new backpack (northface) for christmas - never thought that sentence would come out of my mouth...

and i'm thinking of getting a new desktop for school - most new ones have a tv tuner and can act as a tivo - hopefully it will nail two birds with one stone (unlike those 'mcmansion peeps) and act as a computer and tv

I'm thinking about gettin a new laptop. Opinions on the new TX series from sony, wanna get something very portable.

I meant while you are in school, it doesn't compound interest. That's what my friends told me. Perhaps when you complete school it is higher. I dunno 😕

Actually....I know I won't have time, that's why I want a DVR. So I can watch my show and get over with it. I don't wanna waste time channel surfing. And the plasma....well, (no justification) just would love to have it.

I will be working as a consultant, just so that I have enough cash to set up my apt. I hate paying interest (PLUS being an Indian, paying interest is like a sin to my parents). And I know i will be paying interest on my fees.

Anyone thinking of buying a laptop should wait till they start school. Every school recommends a specific laptop and many even require a specific laptop. I am hoping my school does not require, because I love my existing laptop.

Schlitz (preferably new).

As far as housing goes, I knew a guy who bummed around and slept in the call-rooms of various hospitals for his last year of med school. He said that most people thought he was a homeless guy until he rotated through. Guess daddy couldn't buy him his own townhouse.

My list, it will probably include:
Lasik (seriously)
DVR
at least an update of my laptop if not a new one
new bicycle
stock of household stuff I'll be too busy/too poor to buy
clothing

I know it's not an item, but a sizable donation to a charity would be something I'd love to share.

OP,
As for the backpack. I heart my North Face Hot Shot backpack. It's great. Durable too. Good size. Enough room to pack for a weekend trip out of town. I could probably do without the GIANT brand stiched on it.. but overall I have no complaints with it!

If you need a messenger bag, get a Timbuk2 (kind of trendy though) or a Manhattan Portage bag. They're huge and they can certainly take a beating/dragging down the street which is what my boyfriend did when he closed the car door with the bag still hanging out of the car - He got out and fixed it after fifth block or so. Still good! 👍 👍 👍

2. All new clothes
3. XBox 360 or PS3 (not sure if this is a good idea.....I sometimes get addicted)
4. Backpack

You know, I have an Rx-7 right now but when I leave for med school I will undoubtedly leave it behind (unless I go somewhere warm all the time) and buy a "normal" car. I wouldn't really want to take another loan and have another thing to worry about after I'm done with med school and already deep in debt. Students don't really need fancy cars.

Your number 3...Man, I wish you good luck with that.

I was thinking about it..but I know there is no way I would be able to limit myself to one or two games. I have xbox and I don't play often, but when I do...it is usually upto 2 or 3 in the morning.

Same here.

Being the laggard that I am, I just got the PS2 network adapter from Santee Claus...the SOCOM series online is like meth...

May buy a laptop, may not.

That is about all I'll splurge on. I've already got an old truck I love, an old motorcycle that'll get me from A to B if it is warmer than 65, a pretty big backpack, and a fairly new desktop. If I can't get do it with those, I don't need to...

Does it have a bell, too? I was shying away from the master cardio because someone said that there were a couple of negative aspects to getting it. Also, the cardio III is louder, if that makes a difference 😛 but yes, the master cardio will look *amazing* and will stand out more.
