One of my friends told me that med schools do not care which research topic students study as long as they know that the students can read/understand research papers and apply learned concepts. Is this true? I would sincerely appreciate your response. Thank you so much!

The schools want to see the research broaden your experience with the scientific method. This sounds like it would be a great research experience, go for it.
