Apply to schools you would really like to go and give it a shot.

But if you rather save money/time, taking 1 year off to improve your application is no big deal.

How many hours of clinical experience can you get before you apply? If it's 100+, I'd say apply this year.

If you think you're ready to start med school in the fall then I'd go for it, I think you'd be fine to apply now but if you think you could gain something (anything) from taking a year off (travel, make some money, spend time with friends/family, or even just like do nothing), you have nothing to lose if you apply next year
