I am currently applying to medschool this year and it is starting to look bleak. I know I want to be a doctor, but I am trying to decide what route to choose if I dont get in. Currently I am a Bioengineering major at UCSD with a 3.42 GPA and 29 MCAT. Ive done a good amount of research and hospital volunteering and have good letters of rec. I wanted to know if it would look better to double major in cell biology or molecular bio. and get my gpa up? Any insight or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

integra,

Whether you do cell bio or molecular bio doesn't really make a difference. It matters more which area you're most interested in and which is more likely for you to score the highest grades.

Read up on some of the post-bacc threads and consider retaking the MCAT.

Both are viable options and should help you get into med school.

I think a post-bacc would improve your GPA, and retaking the MCAT with a greater amount of studying can really help your case. Also consider your ECs and personal statement during this time, but it really depends at what point you feel you got rejected.

If you got most rejections without a secondary, then it could be stats. If you got them after interview, could be ECs and personal statement/interview style

don't waste your time double majoring unless you could bring up your gpa big time. if your gpa is pretty much set, that is, if you've already taken too many units to be able to boost your gpa, look into a post-bac or masters program. you could always take the mcat again....and hey, there's always the caribeans(last, last option). good luck.
