I'm a Canadian who currently has a 3.0 cgpa. I had an awful first year filled with mostly D's and a couple of C's (pulled up my average, thankfully) and had a 1.0 gpa or thereabouts. I was suffering with some medical stuff during that time, and it affected not only school, but my general functioning. Since then (when I was able to start the process of overcoming my medical issues), I've maintained a 3.73-3.83 gpa every year from my second year to this current year. I have yet to write my MCAT, but am questioning whether I should spend the time, money and effort to do so. Is a US medical school too far from my grasp currently to make or consider the effort? If it is any consolation, much of the courses from my first year were removed from my degree qualification (they appear on my transcript but do not count towards my degree), which leaves me degree GPA at about a 3.7.

US med schools are typically more difficult to get into for foreign applicants such as yourself (i.e. international matriculants tend to have higher GPAs and MCAT scores than the avg US student). However, if you are dead set on coming to the US for medical school, you have several options including applying for a post-bacc or SMP program in the US. I don't know if any of them have restrictions in enrollment for international students but you should look into it.

Nothing is impossible.

I think it would be hard for you to make it into any US program MD or DO. I suggest you look into the Caribbean. Given that you've had a 3.7+ GPA, it's highly unlikely that you'll be one of those students to fail out of it.
