Hello,

So here is my story:

I planned to attend med school straight out of college, but after my first mcat attempt, my score was not competitive enough (505) for most MD programs, but okay for DO ones, so I ended up applying to 15 MD + 3 DO program, but didn't get accepted.

So following graduation, I retook my MCAT and raised the score to a much more competite score (512). I rewrote my personal statement completely as well as my activity section. Again, I applied to about 18 schools, but due unexplected personal reasons, I only submitted seconardies to only 6 of the schools. The rest of the schools, I did not submit. Of those 6 schools, I got 3 interviews (2 waitlists + 1 rejection)

I am currently preparing for the worse in which I have to reapply for a 3rd time. Because I spent almost 2 months writing and editing my personal statement and I only truly submited my complete application to 6 school, I was wondering if I really need to rewrite my personal statement. Of course, I will be updating the letter to include information regarding activities that I engaged in during my gap year, but I wanted to know if I should follow this plan or start from scratch? Would medical schools look down upon it if I submited a slighlty modified letter given that the schools where I didn't submit the secondaries too probably didn't even review my application at all?

If anyone has any previous experiences with this case or any input to share, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks!

I always suggest a rewrite

Would you recommend keeping the same core things and rewriting based off of those foundations, or fully start from scratch?

I was just wondering if a school you had already applied to would find it strange to change everything in your personal comments essay, but maybe that's not the case?

Schools actually expect you to rewrite your essays.

A poorly written essay is one of the differentials as to why you got rejected.

On a related note, can a lukewarm PS be a reason for a waitlist spot vs. an outright acceptance?

I was a re-applicant this past cycle and I can tell you that I had a feedback appointment with the dean of admissions at a prominent MD school following a rejection (post interview). We went over my application and one of the things they said was, "I see your personal statement is very similar, some parts are almost word for word. You are lucky you even made it this far, I would've disregarded your application completely if I was your screener."

So there's that.
